After the First Death

In everyday society, thousands of normal people get up on the brink of situations. They are recognized as the heroes of today and tomorrow. Achieving the status of hero is seen through many traits. For instance, in the book After the First Death, heroism is displayed through traits.

In the book After the First Death, heroism is displayed through intelligence. For example, Artkin is an intelligent, sly person. “Miro slitted his eyes, studying Artkin, trying to determine if Artkin were really serious about his name or whether he was playing some kind of game” (Cormier 20).

Artkin being smart gives the sense of leadership. Although Raymond is a kid, he’s surprisingly smart. “They were bright and alert, transforming his fat baby face into the visage of an intelligent little human being” (Cormier 98). Raymond being intelligent gives Kate a boost to attempting to escape.

In addition, Kate being as smart as she is tries to trick Miro. “ When she had spoken the words, she didn’t realize the knowledge they contained, knowledge she had somehow absorbed earlier, knowledge she didn’t even know she had until it emerged, like having an answer to a hard test at school after having forgotten how or when you learned it” (Cormier 218).

Tricking Miro can score an escape way out of the bus. Intelligence is the key to being a great hero.

In the book After the First Death, heroism is displayed through bravery. In particular, Kate attempting to escape is pure bravery. “She turned the key in the ignition and pressed down on the acceleration” (Cormier 157). Kate knows she’s at risk when she tries to escape because she’s surrounded by terrorist yet she still takes action into her hands.

Raymond leaves off with the known terrorist. “… said something that Kate didn’t hear, and then he was gone, the ghost of his bright, intelligent eyes and the old man’s voice lingering behind” (Cormier 184). Raymond is aware Artkin is going to do something terrible to him yet he still goes rather than dragging another life instead.

In the book After the First Death, heroism is displayed through the courage to die for a cause. To illustrate, Miro is willing to die for his homeland. “With the mask, he was Miro Shantas, freedom fighter” (Cormier 41). To his homeland, sacrificing is considered a great deal.

For example, Artkin being careless about whatever happens gives him the will to do anything. “Artkin stepped out of the bus without glancing in her direction” (Cormier 75). His sense of leadership gets credited in his terrorist group as like a hero. Ben doesn’t really have a care to live which he lets the task juggle his life. “’ You were also frightened, and yet so brave, so eager to serve’” (Cormier 190).

Serving the law enforcement is possible protecting lives which are the task of a hero. In conclusion, the courage to die for a cause is hero like.

In the book After the First Death, heroism is displayed through calmness in chaotic situations. To demonstrate, Kate stays calm although being held hostage. “She wasn’t panicky” (Cormier 41). Kate being calm shows she can be the heroine the kids need.

Although being taken by the terrorist, Raymond does not panic. “Raymond stood there looking at her, his face bloated and weary” (Cormier 182). He leaves practically sacrificing his life. Specifically, Ben is calm knowing that the terrorist are going to use him. “He said that a package had to be delivered to the – to the men on the bridge.

In conclusion, the book After the First Death displays traits of heroism. Heroism can be seen through the terrorists to hostages. Specific traits can lead to being a hero which will help reacting fast. Strangely enough, heroes are around us all the time silently living or basking in the glory.
