My last Day in London

I planned to stay one day longer in England than the rest of the group, that i could watch a football game of the second English League. West Ham against Millwall. It is the derby between the two Londoner Worker Clubs. In the 1980 years, there where almost everytime fights and riots when these two clubs played against.

Many Films were based on this enmity (Hooligans, Cass, Rise of the Footsoldier, .) and West Hams famous Firm, the ICF. I like it to visit other Football Grounds. Primary not because of the sport, the sport is everywhere the same. The diferents are around the Game. No other Sport has got more emotianal fans, fans who live for their footballclub.

It was pretty funny, my host family were Millwall Fans. The were really wondered as I told them, that i will watch West Ham against Millwall, they thought that we in switzerland just know clubs like Arsenal, Manchaster United and so on. I didn`t tell them that I prefere West Ham and not Millwall ;).

On the Matchday, i had to get up very early, i think about at 6 o`clock. The Match was at 12.30. I was prety tired after two weeks cambridge. I had to leave earlier than roger, who went to London with the coach. I wasn`t allowed to use the coach, i`ve got no idea why.

So i had two use the cambridge bus one last time to drive to the trainsstation. By the way: I thought that Cambridge has got a really small trainstation. Cambridge is bigger than St. Gallen, but St. Gallen has got a bigger Trainstation. But how ever. I took a direct train from Cambridge to London Kings Cross.

I think the journey took about 50 minutes. When I arrived in London, i first bought a big coffee to wake me up. I usually don`t drink coffee, so it worked pretty good. After the coffee, i tried to leave my luaggege somewhere. In Kings Cross was no space anymore, so i had to go down the street to St Pancras to leave my luaggage.

I had to sign a formular, that there were no bombs in my case. They also X-raied my case like at the airport.

After that, i met some fans of Rapid Wien who also went to london to watch this game. We went to east london with the tube. When we arrived in West Ham, we were surprised of the number of police officers around the stadium. There were about 500 police officers all around the stadium.

There where also policemen on horses and a police helicopter in the air. I remembered about the discussion in switzerland about problems with football fans and that we need too many policemen for a football game. Many people are saying, that England is an ideal, they have the hooligan-problem under control.

An ideal? They need much more policeofficers than we do!

But the Pubs weren`t allowed to open befor 4 pm. Remember, the game was already at 12.30. And all the shops around the stadium weren`t allowed to sell alcohol. But i the people i saw were anyway drunk. So we stood infront of the booby moore stand, when suddenly some Millwall supporters had to go through there.

A mob of West Ham supporters formed up. But the policemen with the horses rid in the mob to clear away. It really worked. But i think it`s not okey beacause of the horses. The policemen do their job by choice, the horses don`t. One Millwall supporter threw a bottle to the West Ham supporters.

The police came into the mob an arested him. No one of the other supporter helped him. In Switzerland, ther`s more solidarity. Even when throwing a bottle isn`t an heroic deed. I expected more of the West Ham Fans because they`re very famous. But they arent the same like they had been 30 years ago.

When the match begun, we climbed up to a garage, where we could see the maby the half court and feel the atmosphere. Befor the match begun, the whole stadium, expect the millwall fans, sang their Hymn. It was magic. In Switzerland, you have got an quite different atmosphere.

In Switzerland, you have got a part of the stadium, that sings 90 minutes long, weaving flags, fires up firework, makes big choreographies. This Culture comes from Italy. In England, sometimes the whole stadium pushes their team and after it its quiet. I prefere the Italian modell.

How ever, West Ham won the game and nothing spectaculary happened. Oh, moment, in an inoffical sell booth, i found a book about an famous Hooligan, hand signed by him. For 3 pounds ! The seller didn`t knew it, now its mine ;)

First i went to Kings Cross to go to the train. But when i was there, i realised that they aren`t any trains to Kings Cross. Or mayby there are, but i didn`t realised. I was really out of it. So i went to another Trainstation, i forget the name of it, and there, i found a train to Gatwick.

I lost time, so i had to hurry up. I didn`t found the place to buy a ticket, so i jumped over a balustrade. Nobody saw it.

But i was on time. That really surprised me. When i was ready to go to the plane, the stewardese told me, that it will be delay, because of a snow storm. I didn`t even realised the snow storm. About a half an hour after the planned take-off, we could enter the airplane.

But when we could enter the plane, we waited and waited and waited. I didn`t take off. We had a 2 hour delay. I was bored and was still out of it. I couldn`t sleep. So I decided to search some handflares in the airplane. The Flight Crew didn`t find it that funny. They almost kicked me out of the plane.
