Summary

The book “Boot Camp”, written by Morton Rhue ,is about the Boot Camps in the USA. Connor, the son of rich parents ,is sent to one of these Boot Camps: It is called “Lake Harmony”. There he learns that every kind of humanity can be lost with the help of hurting by physical methods or material methods.

But he is not the only one ,who wants to come away from Lake Harmony ,there are other two children: Sarah and Pauly. With them he flees until the frontier of Canada .At the frontier Connor sacrifices himself for the rescue of the other two. So he is brought back to Lake Harmony.

He has lost his hope for freedom and so he is lost :He becomes a brainwashed child.

At the end Connor’s parents “save” him, but he is so brainwashed that he thinks the reason why he was sent to Lake Harmony is that he was a bad son and deserves everything .

Characters

There are some main characters, I will describe now.

1st Connor Durrell

Connor is a very intelligent child ,so he feels in someways superiors. When he starts a relationship with his ten years older math teacher, his parents send him to Lake Harmony. There he proves that he is more than intelligent : He is brave ,good and courageous.

Connor brakes a lot of rules and have to bear for example TI ,then he has the courage to flee .

The conclusion:

He is brave ,good ,intelligent ,in some ways superiors, courage and also he stands out a lot.

2nd Joe

Joe is a chaperone at Lake Harmony and the “Father” of  Connor’s group Dignity. He is a very cruel man ,who thinks everything he does to the “prisoners” at Lake Harmony, is right because they have done bad things like take drugs or rob a truck stop.

Maybe he feels good with his job, because he may thinks he does good things :He helps “sick” children.

The conclusion:

Joe is a cruel and despising man, who really thinks he does “good” things.

3rd Adam & his “gang”

Adam is ,like Connor, a “prisoner” at Lake Harmony. But he is not like Connor ;he has subdue Joe and the rules there. More than that :He beats up the bad children for Joe, so he gets points for levels. So everybody fears him. A very important point where :Adam is never without his gang ,without them he feels frightened .

7th Rebecca

Rebecca and Harry are transporters for Lake Harmony . They “kidnapping” children and bring them to the Boot Camps or if children flee they have to catch them. Rebecca is a young woman, who was also at a Boot Camp .She saves Connor ,because Connor have save their lives and so Rebecca’s view  of seeing things changes.  After Connor is brought back ,she finds his parents and told them what Lake Harmony really is like.

Without Rebecca Connor would sit in Lake Harmony for a very long time.

The conclusion:

Rebecca has a change :First she is unsure whether she can trust Connor ,then she is very hard and she does not know mercy ,but at last she is a good person with access .

At last Mr Spark

Mr Spark is one of the chaperones at Lake Harmony, but he is not like Joe. He helps Connor and bolsters Connor. He tells Connor he does not work optional at a Boot Camp ,only because his family need the money. Mr Spark is not really better than the other chaperones but he does not restrain like them. After all he helps Connor and this may compromise his job.

The conclusion:

Mr Spark is a good and courage man ,who has a conscience,  you only can commiserate him in some ways.

Main subjects

The book tells us about a thing you cannot really understand. You ask you :Why found people Boot Camps? Why send parents their children there? How should a child live after Boot Camp ? Can he/she be a normal child ?Can they manage their life or need they a man ,who tells them what to do ?

I think nobody knows really what a Boot Camp really is like. A few of people may know something more than the other ,but .....

Good and bad pages and also good and bad comments

In my opinion is at page five a comment ,which describes the main subject very good. “You don’t get out by giving them what you think they want. You don’t get out until you are what they want.”

In the last Chapter Connor writes in his notebook that the escape of Lake Harmony was wrong and he hopes soon he will get out off Lake Harmony ,but only Joe can decide it. It is a really interesting comment because it shows how a smart boy is changed to a brainwashed boy.

The looks in the past in the first chapters are really good to understand more about Connor.

At first chapter when Connor ask if he can go out and use a toilet (p.10-11,line 11) is needless ,it is  a very boring passage. Also chapter 14 is not important (p.148-152).I think so because when a card-board box crashes at Connor ,there is maybe a new method to hurt him, but he is hurt over and over again and it is in some way boring.

When Connor have to write  a letter in chapter 17 (p.177,l.1-25) he cannot do it. I do not know why?  and it is very unrealistic ;yes may his hands fail ,but I cannot understand. The other pages and chapters are good here are some examples the visiting of Connor’s father( Chap.15,pg 156-162).

It is really interesting to see how the father react and how “nice” Joe can be.

Also in Chapter 28,p.278-280 ,when Connor’s parents come to “save” him, one can see the change of Connor. He calls his mum ma’am! Very exiting is the Chapter 19 when Paul.....
