Leisure can be defined as any freely chosen activity or experience that takes place in non-work time. Today, it has been found that the global population use sport and sport related activities as a means of leisure. One of the key issues with sport today is the gender inequalities in terms of participation in sport as well as the inequalities of sport development in certain countries.
It is a global issue, as female participation in sport is lower than male participation in all countries of the world. There are important inequalities that must be outlined in order to raise awareness that participation in sport is as much a gender issue as it is a development issue.
The USA and Sudan are examples that may be used to clearly identify the inequalities of both gender and development participation in sport in a spectrum.
One of the main inequalities in gender participation in sport is the lack equality of event winnings. For example, in Tennis, it can be found that, in any given open event, the top prize of the Men’s event is more than double than that of the womens top prize. In Wimbledon 2016, it was recorded that the winning male received almost 2 million British Pounds compared to the Women’s top prize of 1.1 million pounds.
Another clear indication of the inequality of gender participation in sport is the fact that Muslim and other religious women cannot participate in mixed gender sports due to their uniform and values. For example, there is a very small number of muslim women swimmers, as the sport requires the athlete to wear an approved uniform, in fact, in any Olympic level competition, there has never been any muslim swimmers that have competed.

As Sudan is a LEDC, it has less developed facilities that can be used to help athletes to become successful, thus the participation in sport for people, especially women, is far less in Sudan than it is in the USA. Climate also plays a role, as for countries like Sudan, there are little advantages when it comes to climate, as it does not possess any mountainous regions, which improves an athletes concentration of red blood cells, thus they are more successful as they are fitter and more competitive.
In conclusion, the key issues with sport today is the gender inequalities in terms of participation in sport as well as the inequalities of sport development in certain countries. Today, gender inequality is just as important as development inequality, as both, in sport, need to be equal in order to for the global goals to be satisfied; that is, gender equality in all aspects of life, including wages as well a.....
