The Spanish Armada

In 1588, Phillip II sent 130 ships from Spain to England, in attempt to defeat them, and put a Roman Catholic leader instead in Queen Elizabeth’s Throne of England, who was a protestant Christian.

At the time, Spain (which consisted of Holland, and Belgium) was forced to be made catholic, which they didn’t like and wanted their independence. And the fact that the English have been helping the Dutch angered Philip II, because he was afraid they’d be made into Protestants.

Mary, Queen of Scots, who was married to Phillip I, had also made it clear that if she became queen of England, Philip should inherit the throne after her death; hence his decision to attack and invade England. But Mary got executed in 1587, which angered Philip even more.

The Spanish ships were bigger and slower than England’s, but the guns the English had were much powerful, and their little ships were faster ships and were able to go in between the Spanish ships which caused mayhem and destruction. Most of the people on the Spanish ships have died, while others escaped towards a Northern area.

Bloody Mary

In July 1553, Mary I was given the nickname bloody Mary for executing 300 people because they were Protestants, and that seemed like a threat back then to England, and that was rebellious and going against Mary I’s rules, and god’s. But her nickname was not given to her until her death.

Although her nickname meant that she was held responsible of thousands of death’s when she only executed about 300 people. Mary I died in 1603. In my opinion, she shouldn’t have been called Bloody Mary, because she didn’t cause more than a thousand deaths, unlike her father (Henry VIII) who killed more than 75,000 people, but of course, they were sexist.

I guess they only called her that because women are supposed to be “Diligent”.

Puritans

Puritans; People who wanted to purify the church and get their religious rights.

The 1600’s was the age of religious awakening, where the puritans couldn’t tolerate the king and the queen’s orders of not being able to have their religious rights. The puritans couldn’t handle it anymore that they were even willing to go to war for this matter.

The king had realized this was becoming a problem because he didn’t want to share power with people who weren’t as high and mighty like him. This is a history record known as the English civil war. And apparently there was another group (pilgrims) that was also doing the same as the puritans, and was also very strong, that they both decided to become one and go against the king.

This led to the execution of the king Charles I, and the exile of his son, Charles II.
