„Animal Farm“ by George Orwell

Questions and Answers: Book Portfolio

Chapter I: a) What could Major´s speech be like when given by humans to humans? Rewrite Major´s speech to human context.

“Ladies and Gentleman, listen!

I´m not sure how long I´ll be able to be here with you any longer. Our landlord wants to see me at his court today at midday. Some of his entourage caught me while I was hiding some food of our landlord for my family, so that we don´t have to starve this week.

They were not really impressed seeing this and instantly told our landlord about it. As you all know, he´s not a really gracious man.

But we cannot stand this any longer! Let me tell you. Every day we´re getting up in the morning, just to go out on the fields to work for our landlord´s food. But from all the food we´re producing, how much do we get? We can barely feed our families!

But why? That´s my question! And I´m pretty sure I´m not the only one who´s just so unhappy about our situation!

Look at you two little beautiful girls. Maria and Rose. Everyday you´re standing on the market place, trying to sell your beautiful flower bouquets. But every time there are these rude soldiers coming, having fun destroying all your work. Or you´ll probably remember these upper class men, who were looking at you like you were disgust.

They don´t even think about looking at your flowers, never mind buying them!

But is this equality? Is this the way they can treat us? No, it isn´t! in my opinion it´s discrimination! If you all want to change our situation, we must be a team! We must work together! Let us all fight against invidiousness!

Together we can precipitate a movement! Together we can precipitate a revolution! A revolution for our freedom! Together we are strong!”

Everybody together: “Together we can precipitate a movement! Together we can precipitate a revolution! Together we are strong!”

b) Could the Seven Commandments be a document to base a democratic society on? Why/Why not?

At the first view, the Seven Commandments, in the way they are written, sounds like seven Commands. In this case, it’s more a document for monarchy than democracy. Besides that, the commandments, especially the third and the fourth, prescribe you, how you have to live your life.

A democratic society is having more liberality. On the other side, there are also basic rules in a democratic state. Of course they´re not exactly the same as they are here. But there is a possibility to compare animals with a human being. But there is one substantial point, which is crucial in those Seven Commandments.

The difference between Commandments of a democracy and the Commandments of Animal Farm is, that you´ll never find a rule, of who has to be your friend and who has to be your enemy. Because the really easy aspect on a democracy is, that everybody is just equal.

Chapter II: Why don´t the pigs like Moses the raven and his stories of “Sugarcandy Mountain”? What could it stand for?

Moses, the raven, is a kindly dishonest and sneaky animal. Nearly all of the other animals know, that they can´t give their trust in him. The most time he´s away while all the others have to work. Instead of working, he is telling all his different tales to the animals.

One of these is “Sugarcandy Mountain”. He´s telling them, that this is the place where they all are coming after their death. Throughout this, he tries to influence and manipulate everyone. On top of that, Moses is the only animal on the farm, who´s getting enough food from Mr.

In my opinion Sugarcandy Mountain can here stand for the paradise, the church is always telling their people about.

Another part of Napoleon´s strategy to control animals

The personalities of the animals in Animal Farm are quite similar to human beings. They have the one, who subordinate themselves, as well as the one, who just wants to have a leader role.

Chapter IV + V: a) Explain the function of Napoleon´s dogs and the pig squealer.

When they were puppies, Pincher, Jessie and Bluebell were taken away from their mothers by Napoleon. He trained them to be his bodyguards and protect him. He also uses them to control the other animals and to avert any kind of protest against him. This is achieved by putting the animals into fear and terror.

Jessie, Bluebell and Squealer are used by Napoleon. He wants the dogs to protect him, as his bodyguards. Furthermore their task is to hinder protests of the other animals and put them in fear and terror. Squealer makes a lot of propaganda to manipulate the other animals.

Chapter VI: a) Why does Napoleon present a scapegoat for the destruction of the windmill?

The pigs´ declaration, that Snowball is responsible for the windmill´s first collapse is psychological manipulation. Therefore they prevent the other animals from doubting the abilities of the pigs. They always try to unite them against an enemy, because they need to be on the safe side that no animal is trying to start a rebellion against them.

b) Why is it necessary to change the “Seven Commandments”?

The pigs change the laws for their personal benefits. They were worried that the animals could doubt their way to reign. Because in the Seven Commandments it says, that every animal is equal. For them it is just a legal justification for crimes.

He replaces this hymn with the poem “Comrade Napoleon”. Instead of praising life without human’s control, they glorify Napoleon as the leader without notifying that he controls the animals now.
