Appointment with love
Analysis
Sulamith
Ish-kishor (1896 - 1977) was an American writer. She was born in London,
England, and began writing at an early age. Her family moved to New York City.
At Hunter College, she studied languages and history. She wrote widely, and was
published in several magazines, including The New Yorker, Saturday Review, and
Reader's Digest. Her now-classic story of a long-distance correspondence and
its fateful conclusion, "The Rose," was published in a 1943 edition
of Collier's and was subsequently plagiarized by preacher-author Max Lucado in
a 1992 collection. Her books included Children's History of Israel and The
Carpet of Solomon.
The
short story, "Appointment with Love” is a about the meeting of two people
who have long been sharing a special affection for each other from afar. Lt.
Blanford was an Army Officer who finds warmth and understanding from a lady
whom she only met in the front page of a book: Miss Hollis Meynell. After
thirteen months of long-distance communication, they finally meet personally
in New York’s Grand Central Station. But the soldier’s expectations of the
woman turned out to be the opposite of it. After all it was displayed that the
Hollis Meynell tested the lieutenant by substitution with a passing woman.
The
author shows us the possibility of existence a real strong relationships even
thorough a great distances and the fact that two people can be very close even
having never seen each other.
The
short story Appointment With Love tackles the whole idea of true love. It is a
3d person narration with melodramatic slant. This text can be divided into the
following parts. The first one is the lieutenant Blandford’s waiting on the
station. The second is the description of the correspondence with Hollis Meynell. The third is the appearance of the girl in green
suit. The last one is the test.
The
first part is the exposition of the text and it contains the description of the
main character, lieutenant Blanford; his standing on the station and waiting of
the girl he had never seen, but with whom he was in correspondence. In this
part author used metonymy (his eyes narrowed to note the exact time), metaphor
(filled such a special place in his life), personification (words had been with
him and sustained him unfailingly).
The
second part is about the long-distant relation between them. It contains the
lieutenant’s night-fight, the inspiring message of Hollis about fear, their
remarks about age. Then goes the description of how they found each other: Blanford
noticed Hollis’ remarks in the book. And then it is displayed why the girl
refused to send her photograph. In this part a lot of lexical and stylistic
devices can be found. The author used rhetorical question ( Didn't King David
know fear?), represented speech, simile (like threads of color being woven into
a gray web), asyndeton (He had written, she had answer), hyperbole (out of the
hundreds of … books), metaphor (haunted by the feeling), gradation and
polysyndeton (you come to New York, you see me and then you shall make your
decision).
The
third part contains the appearance of the girl in green suit, her description
and the lieutenant attitude toward her. In this part Sulamith Ish-kishor used
epithets (delicate ears, gentle firmness), metaphor (her eyes were blue
flowers), simile (she was like springtime come alive) to display the loveliness
of the girl. Also she used hyperbole (heart leaped higher than his plane had
ever done) to reveal the lieutenant attitude to the girl.
The
last part is represent how the Blanford meet the lady he consider as Hollis Meynell.
And then how that lady explained that it was a trick and the real Holly waits
him in the restaurant. In this part the author used euphemism (more than
plump), parallel constructions, paradox (This would not be love, but it would
be something precious, a friendship for which he had been and must be ever
grateful). The author used metaphor (bitterness of his disappointment,
Blandford felt as though he were being split in two), repetition (May - may I
take you to dinner?, you — you are Miss Meynell) to display that the lieutenant
was under the strong emotions.
All
the literary devices help the author to create a romantic story and to disclose
the idea that beauty is not about external looks or age, beauty is all about
the inside.
