Argumentative Essay: “Doubt”, written by John Patrick Shanley. Question: Is Donald Muller´s Mother a good mother or not?

The play “Doubt”, written by John Patrick Shanley and published in 2004 is about a strict catholic school principal who doubts, hence the name, a Fathers intentions with a student.

Donald Muller is a student at St. Nicholas Catholic Church and School. Sister Aloysius a nun and the principal of the school suspects an intimate relationship between the boy and Father Flynn. This suspicion is based on very circumstantial evidence and intuition. Donald Muller’s Mother gets called to school by Sister Aloysius and both women discuss Donald’s wellbeing.

The Mother doesn’t show much interest in the possible relationship between Donald and Father Flynn even though Sister Aloysius repeatedly emphasizes the harm this will cause. The mother states that Donald only has to be in school until June when he graduates from St.

Nicholas Catholic Church and School and in this way he will get into a good high school. Is Donald’s mother caring for his future and being a good mother or is she a bad mother since she doesn’t care for a possible sexual relationship between her teen boy and a Priest?

The mothers excuse for not minding the relationship between her son Donald and Father Flynn is that the Father is helping the boy not like everyone else that doesn’t help while the Father is protects Donald. She mentions that Donald gets beaten by his Dad at home so he doesn’t have a functional father role.

In this need for a father role Donald looks up to Father Flynn as one. Later on his mother mentions that Donald’s Father beats his son for his homosexual orientation which his mother reveals to Sister Alyosius during their conversation. From Donald Muller’s mother perspective not only does Father Flynn protect Donald but also Donald wouldn’t mind the possible sexual approach since he is homosexual so sexual contact between the two of them wouldn’t harm Donald in the manner that Sister Aloysius suggests it.

The mother only cares for Donald finishing the year in June so he can get into a good high school. Is this procedure really advisable? Donald gets a better chance at a guaranteed future and this is very important for Donald’s mother. From the way the mother talks we can conclude that the mother comes from a lower class in society.

She sees getting into a good school as a guarantee for a good future. With this thought she puts the psychological wellbeing of Donald behind the material future. By doing this she is being a good mother from her point of view since she comes from a lower class and she believes that anything is okay if you have a better future than she has.

She probably tries to live out her dreams through Donald.

To conclude for the time being Donald’s mother is being a bad mother from our moral and social point of view while from her point of view she is guaranteeing her sons future, permitting better opportunities for her son. In my opinion she is doing what she thinks is best for her son since it is a mild sacrifice for Donald because by her words she taught him how to adapt to situations and therefore after carefully evaluating her situation I came to the conclusion that she is in fact not a bad mother and she is only doing what is best for her child.
