Barack Obama's Victory Speech - Analysis

Barack Obama delivered his victory speech in Chicago 7th November 2012, after being declared the winner of the presidential election that same day. In his speech he addressed the supporters of his presidential campaign and thanked them for their commitment.

In general, he described the vision of the American people as well as the nation’s future and especially focused on what might be possible to achieve during his second term in office over the following four years.


By using many form of rhetorical tools, President Barack Obama manages to give a speech that is full of American shared values and hopes for the future.

He starts off with an allusion to the independence gained by the colony 200 years ago

(cl.ll.1-2). It seems he picks up the audience from the point of action and highlights with an anaphora or parallel structure that everything is improving and moving forward (cl.l.3). The intention behind this is to spread optimism. In the same sentences he refers to the American Dream and that everyone is part of the “American family” (l.7) “[…] as one nation and as one people” (l. 7) by using a repetition.

The choice of adding personal pronounce like “we” (l.7) and “us” (l.6) supports his message and establishes contact with the audience throughout his speech.

In the next paragraph he starts the sentence with the word “tonight” (l.8) again, as he did it at the beginning of his speech. The function of it, is to take the focused back on the “election” (l.8). In the last paragraph of his speech, he switches from “we, us…” to “I believe we can […]” (l.30) to depict, he is the person who will achieve it as well as stress his leaderships quality.

Finally, he refers to the American Dream, using opposites like “black or white” (ll.34-35), “young or old” (l.35) etc. to build contrast to show that everyone is special and included as well as that everyone “[…] can make it here in America if [they’re] willing to try (ll.36-37).

The speech itself is just what you’d expect from any reasonable leader in the U.S. It is a speech where the American Dream is the biggest topic, when being optimistic about the

future and then work a little harder is all there is to save the nation. It is a speech that will promis.....
