„Barack Obama Coins a Slogan“  - Election 2008

Speech Analysis


During the election campaign of 2008, after having lost the primary in New Hampshire to Senator Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama delivered his probably most famous speech. The text at hand is an extract from this speech. Obama tries to convince his audience of his belief that changing the current circumstances is possible, by referring to key events in American history, the American Dream and by using stylistic devices.

In addition he tries to unite the American people and to encourage them to work and stick together as one nation.

Obama uses “we” instead of “I” frequently (s. ll. 1+4+9…), because the so-called “inclusive we”  gives the tended effect of unity as it addresses everyone as a whole instead of excluding someone. So he highlights his belonging to America and also bypasses the gap between himself as presidential candidate and the audience, which does not only consist of the present people, but also of the people watching this speech on TV or the internet.

This extract can be divided up into three parts. In the first one Obama points out of what importance hope is. He indirectly says that people hoping for change were the ones that made America to what it is today and that the current American nation can achieve anything this way (s. ll. 8-12).

To underline what he says he is using metaphors such as “obstacles stand[ing] in [their] way” in line 2. This metaphor is used to describe the people trying to interfere American progress. He illustrates Americas self-confident spirit of being able to reach everything and he gives utterance to the strength and power of American people by using the hyperbole “millions of voices calling for change” in line 3. All in all you could say that Obama knows how to use stylistic devices and references to the AD and American values, to gain the intended result. The point in being a good and convincing orator is making your audience believe in what you say and make it feel like you are meaning every word the way you say it.

Obama is able to do so and I am pretty sure that his ability of giving speeches is a reason why he is preside.....
