Cartoon Analysis

First World vs. Third World or Rich vs. Poor

The cartoon is a drawn picture without text, no speech bubbles, and no text under the picture. It speaks for itself. The picture shows a landscape with a dried out soil. There are cracks in the ground. Seems a landscape in the subtropic continent. You see two drums and two man, they bend down to their drum.

On the left side there is a hudge man with a black suit and a ty, the man holds a small oilcan under a black liquid which comes out of his drum, while his other hand cant the drum to get out the liquid in his oilcan. His drum has a strong form and it sparkles a bit. On the right side of the picture a thin man who wears just pants, he's got no shoes and no shirt. He holds a feeding dish under a dropping clear liquid while his other hand cant the drum which looks verry dirty and smaller than the other drum.

The form is very unshaped and dented.

This cartoon shows the contrasts between rich and poor. On the one side a fat man, on the other a nearly naked thin man. Oil is a rare hard fought product for the Nations of the First World, so is water for the third World. The cartoon wants to draw attention on this imbalance in the World.

I think the message of the cartoon is that everybody should see the injustice that lies in this topic. Its a political theme too, all this comes through. At least it's a less funny than serious cartoon. This cartoon willbe published in a serious daily newspaper than in a socity magazine. The subtext is not so easy to get at first sight, you have to take a closer look.

I think its a good carton when you understand what the cartoon will tell you.
