Characterisation of Abernathy Haymitch and Effie Trinket

The characters Abernathy Haymitch and Effie Trinket are both keyfigures oft he novel “The Hunger Games“, written by Suzanne Collins and published in 2008 and represantatives oft he political system and the society which are described in the book, still they behave in totally different ways.

They are opposits and so te way their contrasts are expressed shows the opportunities an individuum got to live within this system. The appereance of Effie Trinket distinguishes from the appeareances oft he inhabitants of District 12 she working with. Fort hat the extraordinary of her hair has a great importance for her which is expresses by Catnisse’s thought that her „pink hair must be a wig“ (p.27, l.5).

This extravagance shows the normality oft he capitols society, where appearance counts more than character. Her high interest in having luxury style is a line of orientation which goes through every scene in the book she is participating.

AT the beginning she seems to be naive when she talks about the Hunger Games, “Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor.“ (p.27,ll.4-5), which are in fact very cruel.

Still, the more she is present, her ingeniousness fades and it seems like she knows a lot about these cruelity and the possibility of a painful death. That is expressed by her saying „Haymitch can well be the difference between your life and your death!“ (p.49,ll24-25).

This is even shown by her lacking sympathie when she insinuates Catniss that she has just volunteered to do not leave „her (sister)( .) all the glory“ (p.30,ll7-8) and that she does not understand the manners oft he District 12 members which are as bad as the living conditions and these are not compatible with her own kind of manners which where built up by the capitols society.

That is shown by her saying „The pair last year ate everything with their hands like a couple of savages. It completely set up my .....[read full text]

Even he is drunk most oft he time, Haymitch is a very intelligent and human mentor, who does not just coach Catniss and Peeta about fighting in the arena, but even about the rules oft he capitol’s culture. He knows that following these rules could bring them advantages in the form of sponsored presents.

This comprehension oft he capitols system appears when he supports Peetas idea of faking an emotional relationship between him and Catniss, even if she is against that „He made me look weak!“ I say. „He made you look desirable! And let’s face it, you can use all the help you can get in the department.

You were as romantic as dirt until he said he wanted ou. Now they all do. You’re all they’re talking about. The star-crossed lovers from District !“ says Haymitch.(p.122-123, ll. 29-10)

This shows that he s a part oft he system too, but uses a way of self-destruction to bear living within. This stands in contrast to Effie Trinket who uses the capitols rules and comfort to satisfy her need for attention and luxus. She does not know much about living in the Districts, only looks at the bad manners, and the Hunger Games mean a funny entertainment for her which gives her the opportunity to reach a higher stand in the social structures.

That means she is a part of the capitol’s society, not apart oft he Districts, even if she works with them.

She got the function of an observer and watches the life in the District with the distance of a person in the position of a celebrity.

Haymitch is not like Effie, he has lived in District 12 and knows what the life is like there. He has survived the Hunger Games, too, and so he knows what it means fort he participating tributs to fight for their lifes. He understands the dystopian side of these kind of society very well.

He lives in the world oft he high society, particular like Effie, but in contrast to her, he is not a part o fit. This is, for exaple, shown by his decent style of clothing and lacking manners, he could be a part of he whole system, cause he won the Hunger Games, but he does not .....
