Novel „Speak“ written by Laurie Halse

In the given text from the novel „Speak“ written by Laurie Halse Anderson we find a lot of information about the character Mr. Neck, while he is teaching his history lesson in the 8th grad at an American high school and thus in the class from Melinda, the narrator of the given text.

First we get to know that the man is an American citizen having a family, who lived in this country for more than two hundred years (“[…] over two hundred years […]”, p.28, ll. 8f.). His family fought for the country and met the demands of the state, such as paying taxes (“[…] fought in every war […] paid taxes […] voted”, p.28, ll.8-11).  The implication is that he and his family are reliable, careful and conscious of their duties as citizens for their country.

We also learn that Mr. Neck has a son who wants to be a firefighter (“[…] my son […]” p.28, l.15; “[…] wanted to be a firefighter [ .]” p.28, l.23) but who did not get the job. Mr. Neck can’t understand why and because of that he wants to do something about it.

Thereby he pays attention to the future of his son and wants to help when something does not run as it should. So the man is a caring and attentive father. But we do not only get to know some positive character trains but also some describing him in a negative way.

While the class debates about if the statement from Mr. Neck “America should have closed her borders in 1900” is right or wrong, the teacher speaks out that America should have done this so that “real Americans can get the jobs they deserve.....[read full text]
