Characterization Walt Kowalsky
Walt Kowalsky is the main protagonist of the movie „Gran Torino“. He is a retired old veteran of the Korean War where he served for the United States military. He lives in Highland Park, Michigan, where the population used to be white but now has changed into a mostly Asian neighbourhood with many Hmong immigrants from the Kingdom of Laos.
He used to work as an auto mechanic for Ford and therefore really appreciates American cars and also built his own Gran Torino which he is really proud of.
Overall he is in a good state for his age but due to his bad smoking habit he starts coughing blood. His experiences during the war still bother; he has a post-traumatic-stress-disorder because He had to kill many innocent people and also teenager. However he is very self-confident and self reliant and can in spite of his age still maintain his house.
His furniture is old-fashioned but for him still up to date. Apart from that Walt is really narrow-minded, curmudgeonly and overall seems like a really unsympathetic grumpy old man. He can´t really show emotions and also can´t deal with them.
His wife Dorothy has just died so he is a widower and very lonely because he has no relation to the rest of his family. His sons and his grandchildren do not care for him properly and do not even really like him. They stopped having thanksgiving together for instance.
