An outline of the various views on what caused the UK riots presented in text 1 and 2.
In the news report, “Experts Cite Underlying Causes for UK Riots” from Voice of America. They report that it doesn’t seem like there is a reason why the young people a rioting other than “for fun and profit”. A person declares that they’ve got the time.
They’ve got the energy. But they use it on negative things. So why don’t just try to do something positive with that energy like the group HYPE? It seems like they aren’t just rioting but looting. With no reason. Just looting to loot.
In the article “Caring costs - but so do riots”. Camilla Batmanghelidjh she writes about the two different sides of the community. She manufactures a picture of how it is to walk through the streets in the “black Britain”. “Walk on the estate stairwells with your baby in a buggy manoeuvring past the condoms, the needles, into the lift where the best outcome is that you will survive the urine stench and the worst is that you will be raped.” It might be a long quote, but it describes how a lot of the poorest citizens live.
