On the Beach
When we are introduced to Moira Davidson she has already given up on life as it is because she knowes that everybody is going to die soon. She is also the least delusional character in the book in regards to the end of human existance which shows in her confusion when Dwight Towers talks about his familie as if they where still alive and when Mary and Peter Holmes plan their garden evan thogh “They won´t be here in six month” (p.48).
And because of that Moira sees no purpes in her life or any life at all. So she drinks to forget about the reality and because she thinks that there is no reason not to do it.
When she meets capitain Towers she finds a reason of life again and starts to think in a different way. She wants to make the most out of the short rest of her life so she starts learning to become a secretary and stops drinking on her own. She does not need to distract herself from reality because she likes her reality and wants to enjoy as mutch as she can of that reality.
In the book Dwight Towers often talks about his family as if they where still alive. He sees them as a part of a different world than the one he curantly lives in with Moira Davidson. So when the people in Melbourne start getting sick he wants to join his family again by sinking his submarine clos to his old home.

I think the protagonist is mostly responsible for the unhappy marriage from what is shown in the short story. He has cheated on her with the nineteen-year-old at the farm which has left Midge in a state of unhappiness that she tries to compensate with working a lot in the house which annoys the protagonist.
So, the actions of the protagonist have put the marriage into an unhappy state from what we know. The marriage could have already been unhappy before fo.....
