Introduction

We communicate with different people every day under varieties of circumstances.

Fundamental to the high social competence of a person is raised from repeated trials of communication and interactions. Social competence, which is important for a leader, is generally defined as the ability to maintain and establish a positive social and interpersonal relationship as well as to settle its conflicts (Ma, 2012). This essay examines social competence with five related concepts that are social sensitivity, social expressiveness, social control, social performance and social adjustment.

After that, two daily experiences involving social competence will be discussed and to reflect on my personal growth and the development of my future profession.

Part A – 5 concepts related to social competence

To start with, social sensitivity is the first concept concerning social competence.

Social sensitivity is the skills in listening effectively as well as understanding and reading the social situations, standard and rules so that to behave well (Riggio & Reichard, 2008). If a person has a low-level of social sensitivity, they will have difficulties in interpreting others’ verbal messages. As a result, the person cannot give a right response to others’ feelings or requirements.

Besides, Riggio and Reichard (2008) point out that social sensitivity is positively related to a successful leader career and leadership. If a high-level of social sensitivity can be achieved, we can truly understand the feeling of other individuals. It, thus, help the leader to guide the team with effective interactions. As a future physiotherapist, we have to have high social sensitivity in hopes of being aware of the patients’ reaction and leading the team to treat them properly.

With satisfactory social sensitivity, a good social expressiveness is required to deliver our .....[read full text]

According to Riggio and Carney (2008), social control is the ability to regulate the verbal performance, such as presenting yourself well in social situations. It is difficult for one to adapt to different social circumstances and to keep a considerate and thoughtful impression for others. Social control, furthermore, is positively associated with the social self-efficacy and leadership (Riggio, Throckmorton, & DePaola, 1990).

Social control, thus, is crucial for an outstanding leader because it can allow people to better play their role no matter in a group or in the society. For a physiotherapist, we have to encounter different social situations with varieties of clients. We even have to discuss with our colleagues within the ward and take up the role of a leader. We, after that, have to guide discussion flow with the balance of different leadership styles by adopting the high-level social control of ourselves (Riggio, 2011).

With the three social skills being known well, they can assist each other mutually leading to the greater social performance.

After getting familiar with the above social skills, social performance is the next step one has to achieve in order to enhance the social competence completely.

Social performance refers to the level of responses on how well an individual can meet and fulfil the socially valid criteria with the relevant social situations (Cavell, 1990). Cavell (1990) suggests three measurements for social performance, which are the duration of a social interaction, the expression of socially-acceptable behaviours, and the degree to which the expression meets the conditions of the relevant social tasks.

However, the measurements are unique for different social circumstances. Take physiotherapists as an example, we have to be nice, caring, and supportive and prevent any conflicts with the patients no matter how bad the attitudes the patients are expressing. With high-degree of social performance, a higher level of social adjustment will be more likely to be achieved.

The last concept, which is the social adjustment, is defined as the extent to which an individual is attaining and reaching socially acceptable goals now, and the goals can .....

I was so shy before joining the exchange program that rarely does I actively talk to others except for my close friends.

My social expressiveness, thus, was in a relatively low-level and I usually found that there were difficulties for me in expressing myself clearly. I, moreover, was not likely to engage others in a communication. Therefore, at the beginning of the exchange tour, I had nearly no interactions with my new classmates in Japan as I did not know anything about them. However, even some of them invited me to join their communication, such as to share about the hobbies or interests, but I did not respond to them in anyways.

After a while, my teacher realized and discovered my inactive attitude, so they advised me to meet more friends in this unusual chance.

Seldom did I start talking with people who were not familiar with me, but I started to change myself especially for one of my weaknesses, social expressiveness.

Since I had got little chances to talk with others due to my personality, I actually did not fully understand how to perform and express my own feelings and ideas to others. Nevertheless, with the continuous encouragement from my teachers and close friends, I took my first step to initiate the talking with the new classmates in Osaka and they were very welcome so that we become friends after just a while.

The accumulation of the talking experiences enhanced my level relating to social expressiveness, and it made me become more confident than before to express my view and opinion in front of even strangers. After that, my ability

to master social control has also improved since I loved to take the initiative among a group after that experience but with the consideration of .....

Being a teacher has to bear a responsibility to teach the students well and ensure they understand what you have taught. I need to make a team bonding with them to better motivate them to learn, and at that time, I thought that my ability to use social skills had improved a lot after the exchange program. Therefore, I tried to engage them as a team to learn and study together.

However, I was failed. They did not tend to build a teacher-student relationship with me, and I got no clue in this circumstance even once I believed I could handle different kinds of social situations. As I could not engage them to study effectively, their academic results did not get improved. I then put my anger of myself towards them, and a disaster occurred which was no one wanted to have my lesson anymore.

At the beginning, I had no ideas about the reasons of the inactive study atmosphere among my class.

However, the secondary school teachers then found me to have a discussion that I eventually realized my poor social performance level is the major reason for that. Since I could not have a socially acceptable and appropriate interaction with the students, such as I should not fully express my anger to them, I had decided that I had to get an improvement on that with a view to regaining the trust from them.

After reflecting my poor social performance, I first apologized to all of the students and started to listen more from them to understand what is the need of them.

I, eventually, could make a good cooperation with them that I could have a satisfactory social interaction and perform a socially- acceptable teacher-student relationship and behaviour in front of them.....
