Essay Topic: The review of Social Competence Word count: 1991

Introduction

We communicate with different people every day under varieties of circumstances. Fundamental to the high social competence of a person is raised from repeated trials of communication and interactions. Social competence, which is important for a leader, is generally defined as the ability to maintain and establish a positive social and interpersonal relationship as well as to settle its conflicts (Ma, 2012).

This essay examines social competence with five related concepts that are social sensitivity, social expressiveness, social control, social performance and social adjustment. After that, two daily experiences involving social competence will be discussed and to reflect on my personal growth and the development of my future profession.

Part A – 5 concepts related to social competence

To start with, social sensitivity is the first concept concerning social competence. Social sensitivity is the skills in listening effectively as well as understanding and reading the social situations, standard and rules so that to behave well (Riggio & Reichard, 2008). If a person has a low-level of social sensitivity, they will have difficulties in interpreting others’ verbal messages.

As a result, the person cannot give a right response to others’ feelings or requirements. Besides, Riggio and Reichard (2008) point out that social sensitivity is positively related to a successful leader career and leadership. If a high-level of social sensitivity can be achieved, we can truly understand the feeling of other individuals. It, thus, help the leader to guide the team with effective interactions.

As a future physiotherapist, we have to have high social sensitivity in hopes of being aware of the patients’ reaction and leading the team to treat them properly. With satisfactory social sensitivity, a good social expressiveness is required to deliver our messages appropriately.

To further enhance the social competence of oneself, social expressiveness is the second concept related to that after the social sensitivity. Social expressiveness is defined as the skills concerning to the verbal speaking and inviting others to the social communication (Riggio, 1986). In addition, Riggio and Carney (2003) suggest that being a coach, give a public speaking is the examples of performing social expressiveness.

With more experience to express yourself in the public situation,

people can learn how to express themselves in a clearer and proper way so that they can improve the understanding and the future communication with others. Fundamental to an emergence and progression of a leader is having good social expressiveness since they can inspire other colleagues to follow their orders (Carson, 2011). Besides, leaders need to give some feedback to their teammates according to their performance and attitude as well as invite them to get invol.....[read full text]

However, the measurements are unique for different social circumstances. Take physiotherapists as an example, we have to be nice, caring, and supportive and prevent any conflicts with the patients no matter how bad the attitudes the patients are expressing. With high-degree of social performance, a higher level of social adjustment will be more likely to be achieved.

The last concept, which is the social adjustment, is defined as the extent to which an individual is attaining and reaching socially acceptable goals now, and the goals can be indicated by different

statuses such as emotional, social, familial, and relational (Cavell, 1990). An example of one having high-level social adjustment for physiotherapists is that we are required to have a mutually trustful bonding with the clients under different situations. Social adjustment, in addition, is positively correlated to the leadership as people with a high-level social adjustment basically have more knowledge concerning the social norm and they have learnt the correct way to express their idea and behaviours (Chen, Rubin, & Li, 1997).

However, social performance is not the only determinant for measuring the extent of social adjustment as it can be affected by other factors like one’s knowledge about the goals and targets, or even their own motivation to perform effectively (Cavell, 1990). As a result, in hopes of improving the social competence of oneself, the above concepts and criteria are needed to achieve so that one can be a successful leader with high social competence in the future.

However, even some of them invited me to join their communication, such as to share about the hobbies or interests, but I did not respond to them in anyways. After a while, my teacher realized and discovered my inactive attitude, so they advised me to meet more friends in this unusual chance.

Seldom did I start talking with people who were not familiar with me, but I started to change myself especially for one of my weaknesses, social expressiveness. Since I had got little chances to talk with others due to my personality, I actually did not fully understand how to perform and express my own feelings and ideas to others. Nevertheless, with the continuous encouragement from my teachers and close friends, I took my first step to initiate the talking with the new classmates in Osaka and they were very welcome so that we become friends after just a while.

The accumulation of the talking experiences enhanced my level relating to social expressiveness, and it made me become more confident than before to express my view and opinion in front of even strangers. After that, my ability

to master social control has also improved since I loved to take the initiative among a group after that experience but with the consideration of the social situation. Being able to talk with others and share the ideas and opinions mutually allowed me to learn more especially when we saw the same things but with different perspectives. For example, even the same problems can eventually be drawn out two or even more measures to solve them.

As a freshman of a university student, in hopes of adapting the new study environment, I have to learn to talk with others you may unfamiliar with. The experience in Osaka does help me a lot as it makes me dare to begin a conversion with my new classmates. With an enhanced level of social expressiveness and social control, I have made some new friends which help me to suit the new environment .....

I then put my anger of myself towards them, and a disaster occurred which was no one wanted to have my lesson anymore.

At the beginning, I had no ideas about the reasons of the inactive study atmosphere among my class. However, the secondary school teachers then found me to have a discussion that I eventually realized my poor social performance level is the major reason for that. Since I could not have a socially acceptable and appropriate interaction with the students, such as I should not fully express my anger to them, I had decided that I had to get an improvement on that with a view to regaining the trust from them.

After reflecting my poor social performance, I first apologized to all of the students and started to listen more from them to understand what is the need of them. I, eventually, could make a good cooperation with them that I could have a satisfactory social interaction and perform a socially- acceptable teacher-student relationship and behaviour in front of them. Furthermore, we built a

mutually trustful bonding which indicated my social performance and social adjustment level have improved after this event.

As a future physiotherapist, that we may even take the role of a leader in the ward, having an appropriate response to no matter clients or colleagues and building a trustful relationship is always the first step towards a successful career. Seldom do we have to face clients or colleagues with different personalities or emotions, but we are also required to cooperate with them.

With the evaluation of the personal experiences, although I am still far beyond a mature person with prominent social competence, I do believe that one day I will achieve a successful career and life not only in my future professional development, but also in my social life. Only with a high-level social competence and equip the above social skills can we fully cooperate with everyone we may meet in the future, I do think that I have to keep on fostering and promoting my abil.....
