The Happiest Days of Your Life
How would you feel without any love or attention from your parents? And what would you do if your parents took decisions on your behalf.
These are some of the questions that are dealt with in the short story ”The Happiest Days of Your Life”
The story’s structure is a bit special, it starts and ends at the same place, which is in the family’s car and the rest of the events takes place while the family is visiting the new preparation school for the story’s main character.
The structure looks like a circular composition, which is common for a short story. The main character usually leaves home, goes outside, and then ends up home again, so this story goes like car-school-car. In this sort of structure the main character frequently achieves or learns something during his journey. Usually, there is also a lot of development in the events and experience gained when there is a circular composition.
The setting of the short story “The Happiest Days of Your Life”is geographically located in Sussex (page 61, line 2), which is a rich place in Great Britain.

It is also a contemporary story witch makes it easier for the reader to relate to and iden.....[read full text]
They seem to be richer than they actually are, since Charles’ mother had to remind the Headmaster’s wife that they live in Hampstead and not in Finchley (page 63, line 8-9). If we take a look at the text at page 65, line 18, it says: “It’s pricey, of course”. This sentence informs us that the father is also very concerned and he keeps thinking about the schools fee, as they drive away from the preparation school.
That gives the reader a glimpse that the family actually concerns about money. Therefor we can conclude that they might be in the middleclass. They also may have climbed the social ladder and earned their own way up and worked hard for it. There is a lack of love and attention between Charles and his parents. For example Charles walks two steps behind his parents (page 62, line 13), in that way he gets ignored, so he needs further attention and .....
