One of those days in life A girl sits at high stool table. Gets plugs from her ears, sighs, and opens a bag. She takes out very old on verge of falling apart notebook and a pencil. It is a black pencil with “I had it!” label on it. Waiter comes, she smiles, politely orders vanilla flavored coffee and opens notebook. She starts to write. Nothing special, nothing like award winning Nobel Prize for literature, but she pores her soul into those lines. Writing calms her. After of couple minutes she pulls her head up and looks for him. She already knows…

The Happiest Days of Your Life

How would you feel without any love or attention from your parents? And what would you do if your parents took decisions on your behalf. These are some of the questions that are dealt with in the short story ”The Happiest Days of Your Life”

The story’s structure is a bit special, it starts and ends at the same place, which is in the family’s car and the rest of the events takes place while the family is visiting the new preparation school for the story’s main character. The structure looks like a circular composition, which is common for a short story.

The main character usually leaves home, goes outside, and then ends up home again, so this story goes like car-school-car. In this sort of structure the main character frequently achieves or learns something during his journey. Usually, there is also a lot of development in the events and experience gained when there is a circular composition.

The setting of the short story “The Happiest Days of Your Life” is geographically located in Sussex (page 61, line 2), which is a rich place in Great Britain. That can be seen in the fact that the school the family visits, has a swimming pool (page 65, line 25), which is not common for a preparation schools.

The short story takes place at around 12 am (page 61, line 11). Its probably summertime since they are using sunglasses and there are cows out grassing on the fields. The boys at the prep school are also playing football at the fields. We must also assume that it’s perhaps early summer since Charles has to choose his school before summer holiday, and we know that the new term starts in the late summer.

It is also a contemporary story witch makes it easier for the reader to relate to and identify with the characters.

Charles is the main character of the short story. He got black hair, big jutted elephant ears and pale skin witch we can see at page 63, line 36: “He looks so hideously pale, compared to those boys we saw outside”. This sentence informs us that he doesn’t spend so much time playing and that he might not have any friends to play with outside. He might be six or seven years old since he is about to s.....[read full text]

In my opinion, the most focused and highlighted themes in this story could be, taking care of your child’s values or showing love and attention to the children. In my opinion Penelope Lively’s wrote this story to tell parents that they should take more care of their children and give them all the love they can, so the child can feel protected, happy and comfortable.

The title refers to the day the family visited the prep school. When you read the title, it gives you a positive start but what happens in the story is completely the opposite. Charles didn’t achieve the happiest day of his life, however his parents were very pleased and decided quickly to admit Charles to the school and therefor the .....
