1 Introduction

1.1 Preface

The main idea for our project was to cooperate with Ms Birgit Gruber who works in the MIVA. Our event was the “Fachtagung Weltkirche” with the special point “Youth”.

Together with the employees of the MIVA we organized this big conference of Christian people, priests, nuns, monks and youth organisations.

Without the support of Ms Birgit Gruber we wouldn’t be able to do this project.

We also want to thank our teachers Ms. Wurm for leading us to this project and Ms. Scherr for improving our English.

1.3 Summary

1.3.1 English

As our project team was established and we started to think about our project topic Ms Wurm told us something about the “Fachtagung Weltkirche”. After we had thought about it we decided to choose this topic.

Soon we had our first meeting with Birgit Gruber from the MIVA. There everything was discussed, what we have to do, how we can help and what’s the main program of the event and how it goes on.

So we started to think about some things we could do. The project team planned where some young guests could sleep. So we wanted to prepare the accommodation in school. Unfortunately no young guests came and so the accommodation also didn’t happened.

The next step about we thought were the “Weltkaffee” and the photo gallery. For the photo gallery we’ve already planned everything but didn’t get any photos. The project team contacted a lot of youths in foreign countries but didn’t get any photos.

Then we planned the meal and cocktails. Unfortunately MIVA had a little budget so they made the meal on their own and we helped with serving it.

The event itself was very interesting. On Friday we helped handing out the keys for accommodation and there were some presentations and a dinner at the MIVA. On Saturday there were also presentations and workshops by some youth groups. We just were the guides and guided the groups from one workshop to another. In the evening we watched a film.

Some guests already went home on Saturday and the rest on Sunday. The last day there was a holy mass at the “Christophorus Haus” and then there was a “Frühshoppen”. On the end the project team helped the MIVA-team to clean everything.

We learned to know a lot of people from foreign countries and it was a very interesting and nice event.

2       Description of the starting point

When searching for an appropriate topic for our project Mrs. Wurm told us something about the “Fachtagung Weltkirche”, which is an annually meeting of referees all over the world. They are going to discuss various topics in connection with youth and religion.

Furthermore we informed ourselves about the project at Birgit Gruber from the MIVA. A few weeks later we had our first meeting, where we discussed everything what was important and what we had to do.

Our responsibility for this event was to support the organizers with the planning and carrying out of the hosting. This included the distribution of the keys for accommodation, serving the meals, supporting people in need (e.g. old people with walking problems), showing people the way to locations and help desk service in case of emergencies.

A further task was to prepare a photo wall with images showing an object or symbol of young people’s religion. This collection should been used as decoration in the representation hall of the “Christophorus-Haus” where the participants will meet for the evening of encounter on Friday evening.

At least we will prepare the “Weltkaffee”. This is located in a room in the monastery of Lambach, where some tables will be put in and on each will be a different topic. When the people stay by the table with coffee and cake then they are allowed to discuss the topic and write something on the tablecloth.

For this evening our project owner and the team wanted to make a meal which was easy to cook and not very expensive, but then the MIVA got money problems and did this on their own. So the team just helped serving the meal.

The official end will be on Saturday evening when most people will check out. But for the ones who wanted to stay one day longer there was a Catholic Church service in front of the “Christophorus-Haus” which also local people from Stadl-Paura and the neighborhoods took part in on Sunday morning. After this there will be a car blessing and a “Frühschoppen” with barbecue.

Afterwards our finally task will be to support MIVA-employees with the cleanup of the “Christophorus-Haus”.

2.1 Organisations

2.1.1 “Österreichische Bischofskonferenz”

This is the main organizer of the “Fachtagung Weltkirche”. Everything was organized by the bishops’ conference, which is located in Vienna. All the information about the project was passed from Vienna to the MIVA in Stadl Paura and furtheron to our project team.

The Austrian “Bischofskonferenz“ is a union of bishops of the Austrian dioceses. It consists of 15 members and one general secretary.

Their tasks are to study and promote common pastoral functions, give mutual advice and carry out necessary coordination of the church work, the common enactment of decisions as well as the care for the connections to other Bishops’ Conferences.

Bases for these tasks are the documents of the Second Vatican Council, especially the decree on the pastoral Office of the bishops, the Church statute book from 1983 and the Articles of Association of the Austrian Bishops' Conference in the year of 2005.

The General Assembly is their principal organ. The members of the Bishops’ Conference are in principle committed to take part on the General Assembly. Only if someone is ill or is committed to an increased authority it will be accepted that this person is not taking part. For the bishops of the diocese, in such cases, it is possible according to the requirements to be represented of the statutes.

Every member of the bishop conference can bring in his own proposals for the agenda.

The Apostolic Nuncio, who is no member of the Bishops’ Conference, is also invited to the plenary assembly in Austria.

The assembly usually takes place in the spring, summer and autumn of a year and is convene by the chairman of the bishop conference.

2.1.2 MIVA

MIVA Austria

The MIVA Austria is an organization that helps the Catholic Church. Their task is to procure vehicles for young churches and projects of the developing countries. As required they spend cars, trucks, motorbikes, bicycles, tractors, agricultural equipment, occasionally boats or little ships, planes or load animals to poor countries.

While Europe suffers already on the traffic, there are a lot of people in poor countries, who would need mobility. Priests, sisters, development workers and medical personnel would need it much more. So the idea of MIVA was: “Also mobility is dividable”.

Not just Austria helps to share the mobility, also Latin-America, Africa, Asia, Oceania, South- and Southeast-Europe are supporting. There is a big web to all partners over the world. A big web of solidarity and in much cases also friendship.

Foundation of MIVA

It all began with the death of a missionary. The German priest Otto Fuhrmann OMI died as a missionary in the north of Namibias, after he fell ill on a tropical fever. He could be saved, but the hospital was so far away that they had had to go for days.

A friend of Fuhrmann, Paul Schulte, who was a widely known missionary in Germany, decided to do something that such cases don’t happen anymore. His idea was to supply to all missionary vehicles and communication equipment. So he wanted to increase their mobility and above of all their survival chances. 1927 he found the MIVA (“Missions-Verkehrs-Arbeitsgemeinschaft”).

MIVA International

MIVA is, with projects in over 60 countries, an international active organization. From Stadl Paura it has contact with the whole world. The idea of MIVA is meanwhile also international.

In numberous countries it has been taken up.

MIVA all over the world

The MIVA is represented all over the world. We have MIVAs in Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, USA, Austria, Great Britain, South Korea, Slovenia, Slovakia, Poland and Australia.

The international MIVA family includes at present 11 national organizations.

2.1.3 Monastery of Lambach

The monastery of Lambach was the main location for the project. To perform our project we used the “Gotischen Speisesäle” and the “Sommerrefektorium”.

It is in the heart of Lambach and nearly everybody who lives in the surroundings know where it is. But also a lot of other people knows this famous monastery.

This was a big advantage for us because we are students of the Business of Lambach which is located in the monastery.

Many Christian people go to the monastery of Lambach because it’s very old and antic. There are also some famous freskos from the Renaissance.

An example is the fresco from the year 1080 “Christus heals the demoniacs”, which is shown on the right.

History of the monastery

The monastery was founded in about 1040 by Count Arnold II His son, Bishop Adalbero of Würzburg, changed the monastery into a Benedictine abbey in 1056. During the 17th and 18th centuries a great deal of work in the Baroque style was carried out.

Lambach escaped the dissolution of the monasteries of Emperor Joseph II in the 1780s. It was however dissolved by the National Socialists in 1941, in the “Operation Klostersturm”, and the premises were used for the accommodation of a Nazi school and training institution.

The Benedictines were exiled or taken for forced labour.
The dispossessed monastic community returned to Lambach Abbey after the end of World War II.

Many Christian people go to the monastery of Lambach because it’s very old and antic. There are also some famous freskos from the Renaissance.

An example is the fresco from the year 1080 “Christus heals the demoniacs”, which is shown on the right.

2.2 Youth groups

Six different youth groups

Ms Birgit Gruber wanted 6 different youth organisations for saturday morning. It was planned that the team and three other voluntary helpers are guides of 6 groups. We should go with the group to three stations where they should hear something about one of these youth organisations. We choose these 6 groups:

2.2.1 “Sale für Alle”

The youth center wanted to create a room for the social learning for pupil with the help of students in Vienna. Everything is based on a voluntary and social basis.

The court of a student apartment offers space for the activities with which “SALE für Alle” tries to bring together culture, nations and religions with some games.

Their aims are:

·       They have nearly no economic interests. Honorary employees work together with the children or young people. They build a benevolently atmosphere so that children with a migration background can feel free there and it’s easier to get „integrated“.

·       Students can indicate other people or friend to the situation of the „integration“-children or young people. They are able to help pupils with the same background. This exchange is very important for the identity building of the children. So they have an extra help outside of the family.

·       They can get in contact with similar people.

·       They want to offer the youth and children a piece of home and an agreeable climate where all participants can grow on benevolently encounters.

·       With their focus on preventive pedagogy “SALE für Alle” is very sustainable. The children aren’t limited. Prevention means preventative actions against biases opposite strangers and for a cooperation of culture, the social milieu and different religions from the beginning.

Their target group composed of poor, abandoned and vulnerable children. With their common games, the most natural art of infantile activities, takes the central part.

The voluntary employees and students offer their work force free of charge.

They can use the infrastructure of the hall of residence in 1030 Vienna and therefor they don’t need to rehire other rooms. A big playground, the “SALE-Hof”, a material room, a lounge, sanitary facilities, an office and so on are available.

Sponsors enable the acquisition of handicraft work material, computers, balls and t-shirts as soon as a meal for the present children.

2.2.2 “Weltdorf MAZ”

The “Weltdorf” is a youth project of the mission house St. Gabriels with Steyler focal points:

·       Meeting with other cultures and religions

·       Worldwide solidarity

·       Faith strengthening

Especially young adults who are social committed, intercultural oriented and interested in the Christian religion are their main target group.

The “Weltdorf”-team St. Gabriel is borne by a “core team” and committed Styler missionary and missionary sisters as well as the connected adults (honorary employees of the “Weltdorf”, former MaZ (“Mitarbeiter auf Zeit” – workers for time), employees of the catholic youth, people form the religious order, etc.)

MAZ are Missionary for time who offer worldwide their voluntary commitment for faith, peace and justice. They want to campaign for a fair and peaceful world by the use of their believe. They see themselves as a bridge between the people and want to learn from each other.

Live – Pray – Work together

Since the beginning of the project of the missionary for time, the MAZ this is their motto. It shows the quality and the special feature of the voluntary work. All orden communities the MAZ-project offers allocates their infrastructure to the young people thereby they can do a voluntary work at the end of the world if they want.

In the last 25 years over 700 women and men from Austria, Germany and Switzerland did such a voluntary commitment with the Styler missionary. This commitment wants to lead to a sustainable sensibility and a lifelong engagement for the people especially for the poor and compressed ones.

Some young people asked the Styler missionary if they are able to went to a “Kloster auf Zeit”. But the Styler don’t have real cloisters, but missionary stations. They wanted to go to missionary station, not to a cloister for a certain time. So the definition of MaZ was founded.

2.2.3 “Volontariat bewegt”

“Volontariat bewegt” is an initiative from “Jugend eine Welt” and the “Salesianer Don Boscos” for the promotion of voluntary services and civilian services abroad.

Committed women and men have the possibilities to live one year in practical solidarity in Africa, Asia or Latin America. As a volunteer you get involved with deprived children and teenagers in street kids projects, youth centers, schools, apprenticeship workshops, centers for industrial training and children hostels of the “Salesianer Don Boscos” and the “Don Boscos” nuns.

You perform as supporting teacher, do a lot of free time activities with the kids and a lot of open children and youth work and so you can engage yourself for the integral education of children and youth after the example of the Italian social pioneer Don Bosco.

Since 1997 already 420 young Austrian collected important experiences for their private lives through a voluntary service. Ethiopia, Ecuador, Ghana, India, Lesotho, Mexico, Malawi and the Philippines are their actual foreign countries. The voluntary missions are support by the Austrian developing working cooperation and private and catholic initiatives.

What does a voluntary?

A mission for “Volontariat bewegt” means teamwork in the projects on location in the field of children and youth work. This mission lasts 12 months.

Some tasks for example are:

·       Organization and performance of free time activities

·       Educational functions

·       Private teaching and education

·       Aid in the vocational training and job orientation

·       Organizational support of the projects

·       Support of parish activities

·       Contact person for children and teenagers

Before the mission starts the voluntary has to inform himself about the different problems and aspects of the foreign country as well as the needs of life in these countries. The common barriers like visa, inoculations, insurances and other organizational things need to be handled.

Therefor it’s important that the voluntaries are well prepared for their time abroad. This takes part in different steps. “Volontariat bewegt” uses formal peers for the education of the new ones. This means that the peers plan, design and hold the preparations. An own independent preparation is on the voluntaries’ own authority. The preparation lasts half of a year.

2.2.4 “Loretto”

The “Loretto” community is a young, catholic community from believers in Austria. There are married and single people as well as world priests in the community. All members identify themselves as brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. They have the same call for holiness and publication of the gospels. They should fulfill this call with their living standards, services and charismas as far as possible.

The main aims of the “Loretto” are:

·       The community serves the personal search for god for the individual and the mutual strengthening

·       It also initiates and bears in confidence of the grace and charisma the “rooms” in which people can live today

They are in the heart of the catholic church and understand themselves as a movement (“Movimento”) which prays, appears and lives for the replacement of the church. As a movement which trust on the plans from god “plans for the salvation” and wishes for a new fire from the Holy Ghost and a new Pentecost.

As a catholic community they take hear from the Word of God and the sacraments and avow themselves to the traditions and the magisterium.

Out of love to their “separated brothers” grows a desire for the complete unity of Christi’s body.

A pilgrimage to Medjugorje (Croatia) was the beginning of the “Loretto” community because of three young students who met weekly to pray the rosary in Vienna in 1987.

As a private coalition of believers the “Loretto” community is on their way to churchly recognition.
They have a closely contact to the local bishops and to all who are a constructive minority group.

At the moment there are 240 members in the community, 233 are laity and 7 world priests. Actually the “Loretto” have 80 postulates all over Austria. They examine if someone really wants to be in the community or not.

There are open events for everyone for example prayer circles, family groups, evenings of charity, praying weeks and so on. They are very well visited, altogether around 4,000 persons per year.

In the particular diocese is the particular regional leadership of the community in contact with the local bishops. Christoph Cardinal Schönborn is very important because the community is in contact with him to get spiritual advice for the development of the “Loretto”.

2.2.5 “Katholische Jugend”

The “Katholische Jugend” is the official youth organization of the catholic church in Austria and arranges the churchly youth work.

The “Katholische Jugend” is made up of the members, teams of all levels, volunteers and full-time workers.

The single dioceses of the community link their work at federal level. The federal offices coordinate this work, help teenagers on a national and international level and develop and support projects.

They are free for everyone with their offers and service features which act in the field of youth work – especially in the church one.

The “Katholische Jugend” Austria is a part of the “Katholische Bewegung” of Austria and is managed by voluntary chairpersons.

Their general orientation:

Jesus sagt: „Ich bin gekommen, damit sie das Leben haben und es in Fülle haben.“ (Johannes 10,10)

„Ihr seid das Salz der Erde!“ (Matthäus 5,13)

Out of the above mentioned words they infer their mission and vision.

In our work we want to build a world in which fairness and peace is and all people can live together in dignity and harmony. We dream about a church which is alive and powerful and where young people are able to find a room for their deployment and figuration.

Basis and motivation for our action is the Christian faith. We orient ourselves on the example Jesus Christ, on the Holy Scripture and the community of our church.

How they act?

1.     Spiritually and politically

Their relationship with god leads them to political actions and this engagement let them bring the hopes, desires, fears and worries of young people to god.

2.     Living environment oriented and sexes sensible

The living environments of teenagers, their age and their sex are essential reference points of their planning and acting.

3.     Participative and democratic

Teenagers and young adults are active in all our working areas. They take on responsibility and decide in a democratic way.

4.     Solidary and integrative

The engagement for the living chances of young people and the participation of disadvantaged persons are important for your work.

5.     Cooperative and networked

Appreciation and respect mark our contact with each other and with national and international partner out of the sector youth, society and church.

Our events, projects and groups act very sustainable concerning the education of teenagers, the development of our organization as well as the conservation of the Creation.

7.     Subsidiary and service oriented

In our organization we pay attention to the different levels with the particular skills and offer our support and service.

2.2.6 “Young Caritas”

What let them act?

·       About 42 million people are on the run worldwide

·       1 million people are poverty endangered

·       842 million worldwide suffer from hunger

“Young Caritas” are acting in

  youngCaritas” Vienna/East Lower Austria

  youngCaritas” West Lower Austria

  youngCaritas” Upper Austria

  youngCaritas” Salzburg

  youngCaritas” Tyrol

  youngCaritas” Vorarlberg

  youngCaritas” Carinthia

  youngCaritas” Styria

  youngCaritas” Burgenland

They offer different kinds of work like education, voluntary hands-on trainings, civilian services and apprenticeships.

Education:

You are interested in a work with people and in a function in a social job like family aid, geriatric care, care of handicapped persons or pedagogy. Then you need social engagement, a good heart, a friendly manner and high qualifications which you can get in one of the “Caritas”-schools.

Their main topics are

·       Too old?

·       Far away?

·       Poor and excluded?

·       Different?

·       Homeless?

·       Hungry?

3 Preparation OF the EVENT

3.1 Accommodation at school

Ms Birgit Gruber and her MIVA-team had the idea that some young people can sleep in the school building of the HAK Lambach. The plan was that they sleep in the festival room with sleeping bags. A bathroom and toilets are given there.

So Marlene, Lisa and asked the headmaster Mag. Stefan Leitner if it is possible that some teenagers can sleep in the school. After he agreed, we began to plan everything.

Your main steps were:

1.     Ask the headmaster

2.     Ask for a key for the school building

3.     Informed the fire brigade

4.     Tried to plan how many people will come

5.     Searched for the cheapest sleeping bags to buy them

6.     If necessary buy toilet paper, soaps, …

7.     Ask Birgit how many people will sleep there

8.     Prepared the bathrooms, toilets and the festival hall

9.     Buy the sleeping bags

We planned everything and did all steps until the 8th one, because then we got bad news from our project owner.

3.2 Preparation of the meal and cocktails for the evening of encounter

On Friday there was the evening of encounter planned, a nice meeting with participants of the „Fachtagung Weltkirche“. We should make a delicious meal and some non alcoholic cocktails.

Our steps were to find a meal we want to cook and which is easy and quickly prepared. The team also needed to find some good tasting cocktails without alcohol. This was very difficult for us because we also had to have a look on the budget for the food. Finally we decided to prepare some grilled spears with chicken and vegetables, different sorts of meat and curry chicken spears.

As side dish we wanted to serve a lot of salads like tomato and mozzarella, potatoes salad, Greek salad and green salad.

Before the event started the team met to prepare all the cocktails. They tasted very good, but unfortunately Ms Gruber told us one month before that the budget is too low to afford this good cocktails which need of course fresh fruits.

3.3 The photo gallery

After the first meeting with the project owner, Miss Birgit Gruber, the team had decided to make a photo wall with the title „How do you show your faith in the best way? Which picture shows your faith compared to other youth people?“ Then the team tries to contact their friends and family members who are living all over the world.

For example we contacted people in Italy, Bolivia, Norway, Turkey, France, Slovakia, Taiwan, Croatia and Africa. They were asked to send us their best pictures and to give us some information like their name, their age, their homes and what religion they have. We expected about 20 pictures. From these photos we had to choose between 8 and 10 out of them for the photo wall until the end of May because at the beginning of June we wanted to give them to the copy shop „Happy Foto“ to print them.

The team also calculated a cost planning for the wall.
