Film review: „Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia“

BBC’s crime drama series „Sherlock“ is an adaptation from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories. In the first episode of the second season the monarchy is being blackmailed. Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson are hired to help the monarchy to get the blackmail material back.

They discover that there is more to the story than everyone is letting on. Sherlock tries to keep the phone, on which the blackmail material is being held, out of the enemies hands while simultaneously trying to unlock the phone. It begins a long-standing duel with the clever and ruthless Irene Adler.

She is the owner of said mobile phone which makes her a target of political factions. Romantic attraction between Sherlock and Irene seems to be the downfall for both of them.

In this episode of BBC‘s Sherlock Homes appear the characters Sherlock Holmes, Dr John Watson, Mrs Hudson, DI Greg Lestrade, Mycroft Holmes, Jim Morarty, Molly Hooper and Irene Adler.

The main character is Sherlock Holmes, a private detective with extraordinary observing skills, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Another main character is Dr John Watson, Sherlocks attentive assistant and best friend. He is portrayed by Martin Freeman.

Irene Adler, portrayed by Lara Pulver, is also very important for the episode „Sherlock Holmes: A Scandal in Belgravia“. She is the woman who outsmarted Holmes.

Sherlock is a thinker and an observer. It is very easy for him to draw conclusions from very little details, an ability which goes not unnoticed by others.

Dr John Watson is a loyal presence in Sherlock‘s life. He is a very brave and smart man. He often puts himself at personal risks for Sherlock. Nevertheless they share a strong friendship. His humor is often very sarcastic.

Irene Adler is known as „The Woman“. Despite her fierce and cold personality Irene feels romantic attraction to Sherlock Holmes. She is manipulative, enigmatic and clever. She was able to outsmart Holmes most of time in the episode.

In this episode of Sherlock Holmes I like Dr. Watson the most. His sometimes clueless appearance seemed very funny. Also his sarcastic humor and his sometimes snide and witty comments were very amusing. Nevertheless Dr Watson is a very clever man. His attempt to keep up and support Holmes did not go unnoticed by me.

In this episode it seemed like he was always a step not only behind Sherlock, but also behind Adler. These reasons lead to my conclusion that I identify with John Watson the most. Just as Watson, I sometimes feel like I’m always a step behind the thinking process of others.

Like Watson my humor sometimes has a very sarcastic streak.

Despite my admiration for Irene Adler in the story „A Scandal in Bohemia“ written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, I dislike her the most in the episode „A Scandal in Belgravia“.

In the book she is a character who was able to outsmart Sherlock because she is a quick thinker and very clever. In the episode she seemed to be very cold and violent. Irene Adler is in no way stupid neither in the book nor in the series. But in the series it seemed as if the only reason she was able to outsmart Holmes was because she was not afraid to hurt someone, emotionally or physically.

In the series are various callbacks to characters and actions of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s other stories. The episode of BBC‘s „Sherlock Holmes: A Scandal in Belgravia“ is based on Doyle‘s short story „A Scandal in Bohemia“.

The plot is really similar. Irene Adler is still the antagonist. Sherlock Holmes is still the detective who is being hired to expose and to trap Ms Adler. Dr Watson is there to help and to assist Holmes. The scene in which Watson and Holmes try to trick Adler with a fire is also adapted by the scene in the short story.

The series is related to British culture since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself is British. His books of the adventures of Homes and Watson are classics which are known worldwide. There are many well known adaptations. His stories are never getting old and are always a pleasure to read or to watch.

I love the books of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and they will always be some of my favorite stories to read. So I really like the fact that the series portrays the written characters very well. Even when the times are completely different from the written one I gladly watch the series.

I love the editing and the well thought over camera work. Sometimes the plot takes a totally different turn than in the books e.g. „A Scandal in Belgravia“. The foundation in that episode stayed mostly the same but the storyline is still very different e.g. the loss of Irene Adler in contrast to her victory in the short story.

I would recommend not this episode but the series altogether. It may have it’s weaknesses but all in all it’s a well adapted Sherlock Holmes storyline. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are very talented actors and some of my favorite ones (ironically Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, different actors who also portrayed Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson, are also some of my favorite actors).
