Analysing tasks (“Frankenstein” – Nick Dear)

  1. In scene 12, De Lacey, his son and daughter-in-law are introduced. They live peacefully together in a cottage on the country side between fields. Agatha and Felix leave De Lacey alone when moving out to work on a field. The blind, old man starts to play the guitar and the Creature steps into the cottage, attracted by the music. De Lacey hears someone coming in, offers his food and seems to be happy to be in good company.

The Creature, created by Victor Frankenstein, a scientist, was abandoned and left unaware about himself after his lonely and awkward birth. He can neither make himself understood nor does he know anything about life and human society. De Lacey finds out, that the Creature can´t talk and therefore they communicate by body language and develop trust and sympathy. He is very open-minded and shares his time as well as his food with the stranger.

He also starts teaching the Creature to talk and shows him how to play the guitar.

  1. Since the first time De Lacey and the Creature met, they spend a lot of time together whenever Agatha and Felix are absent. The Creature learns to talk and furthermore, De Lacey teaches him about human lives and similar connections. He is very intelligent and learns new things quickly. The Creature comes to understand the lonely truth of his existence in the world and that he will never be a part of the human society.

Therefore, scene 12 is of overriding importance. If the Creature did not met De Lacey, he would not have found acceptance perhaps and would not find out how and by whom he was created. De Lacey passes on his good-naturedness and how to be virtuous, but nevertheless, he finally becomes the monster others fear him to be. Trying to find peace and understanding, all he finds is hatred and betrayal.

Meeting De Lacey is the precondition for the rest of the story, otherwise he neither would have found his creator Frankenstein, nor would he be able to demand a female Creature or to force Frankenstein to take responsibility for the consequences of his own pride. The Creature became human and self-determined and as a result, the conflict and Victors “experiment” degenerated into a disaster.

  1. Victor Frankenstein leaves his home and climbs up Mont Blanc to find the Creature in order to kill him, because the Creature murdered Victor’s younger brother William. Frankenstein is very surprised that the Creature moves very human-like and has a great balance. But over and above he is astounded that the Creature is educated and can communicate. Victor´s try to kill him fails and the Creature argues with him.

He makes Frankenstein responsible for his behaviour and tries to convince him to create a female Creature. Even if the Creature will never be a part of the human society, which is his biggest wish, he wants to have a partner to love her and to be understood and accepted. Finally, Victor agrees with him, because the Creature promises to leave Europe for ever with his created wife.

Frankenstein decides to perfect his work and to create something like a goddess, .....[read full text]

His Creature became educated and insists on the same rights as other people, especially the right to live. In addition, the Creature forces Frankenstein to keep on the responsibility for his deeds. (And the Creature is one result of his deeds.) C: “If I´m a murderer, you made me one.” (page 54, line 21). Furthermore, the Creature read “Paradise lost” and quotes it.

He should be Adam, because god was proud of him as it was his own creation. But his own Creature is not important for Frankenstein and he only wanted to proof that he has the power to create human life. The Creature is for just an experiment which has gone wrong. Therefore, he disregards human lives and gives himself a higher place in the society. The Creature is not an accepted part of the society, even if it has not done anything wrong.

C: “And I was good, I wanted to be good!”(page 55, line 13-14). This also demonstrates human superficiality, because people judge the Creature on the basis of his ugly appearance and do not give him a chance to show his friendly and peaceful character. Referred to the society this shows, that lower classes for example have scarcely no possibility to become an accepted and respected part in communities.

The Creature was educated by the blind, old man (De Lacey), but even if De Lacey vested him with kindness and morals, this does not do anything for him, because he was still encountered with hatred, rejection and disgust.

Frankenstein has the luck to be part of a respected family and has also a high position because of his extensive knowledge as scientist. Therefore, it seems as if Frankenstein and his Creature live in different worlds with different circumstances.

Frankenstein approaches him about the Creature´s conscience: “Do you feel no remorse?” (page 56, line 1). But why does the Creature have to take care on other people if they treat him without mercy? Another point is, that every person feels the need of sense of belonging, for instance love or friendship. Therefore, the Creature wants to have a female created like him who will have the same life preconditions and the same destiny. “Every creature has a mate!” (page 57, line 24) he insists on the same rights like every living creature. “A good man deserves it!” (page 58, line 8).

If you give your best, you must get something back, but the Creature tried in vain and now wants to be rewarded. Many of the just called aspects can be rediscovered in a part of the dialogue between Frankenstein and the Creature: “A master has duties – you left me to die! I am not a slave. I am free. If you deny my request I will make you my enemy, I will work at your destruction, I will dedicate myself, I won´t rest until I desolate your heart! .....

Nick Dear illustrates in his version of the novel “Frankenstein” many important and interesting questions concerning human life and also demonstrates problems of our society. Striving for power and being successful cannot make people happy as we can see on Frankenstein. He neglects to cultivate his friendships and misses important things of his life, for instance he never felt love. “I don´t know what love is. [ .] Every chance I had of love, I threw away.

Every shred of human warmth, I cut to pieces. Hatred is what I understand.” (page 92, line 17-20) Focused on making progress he becomes rational and numb. Another message of the play is that the growing mechanizing entails a lot of risks and dangers. There already exist robots in our society which are created by people and for example replace human workers. Since some years, scientists are able to change genetic characteristics and in vitro fertilization is usual today.

But especially the first example is not virtuous and can be abused. Some groups of people are flirting with the idea of creating perfect humans or even to “breed” their strong army in order to wage war. This means also, that our lives would not be unique and valuable any longer and human dignity would get lost. The new science would overcome tradition of human beings and everything what people believe in, especially the Bible.

Many of them believe that they are part of god´s creation and this gives their lives a meaning. People are not perfect, but this is human and normal. Therefore, we do not have to create artificial life which is absolutely pure. In some cases, people created completely healthy children to force them to donate organs in order to save their diseased “natural” child. All these things could absolutely lead to a dystopia and split our society.

There should not be so much responsibility in the hands of people, but in the hands of god.

Frankenstein created his Creature only for proving that he is able to do so. Just an experiment, he is not interested in the Creature´s feelings and does not treat him like his own son. In addition, he does not care about the consequences. The Creature can harm other people or even kill them. He cannot be controlled and Victor Frankenstein does not assume the responsibility.

This system of new sciences and technologies also changes ideas of justice and punishment. In my mind, the novel can be seen as a warning to all of us. We should not accept everything what happens in science. The most important thing is to protect our culture and tradition and enjoy our life with everything it offers. We do not have to strive for wealth and recognition, we do not have to prove our power – especially not in the way .....

  1. The novel Frankenstein illustrates the possible effects resulted by a man who tries to replace god and create human life by himself. For the first impression it seems to be an achievement if people could bring dead bodies back to life. Our scientists made great discoveries and an important development in the last years, but the story of Frankenstein shows what happens, if scientific experiments get out of hand.

Frankenstein is striving for power and self-affirmation and this is exactly what degenerates finally into a disaster. At the same time, he disregards human dignity as well as god’s creation or rather the origin of human life. Frankenstein intervenes in the natural cycle even if it is not his business; a man´s creation is imperfect. (cf. line 25).

  1. I am not quite sure if I am interested in watching the movie, because I cannot imagine if all the aspects the novel deals with can be demonstrated as extensive as in the book. In my opinion the reader sometimes needs some time to understand the deeper sense of some scenes. The good thing about the book is, that you can reread scenes whenever you want and build your version of how the play can be translated into practise.

The Creature can represent an amount of people who are treated badly and who are disregarded. Maybe we can only identify with the Creature, because we cannot see him. At least it is easier this way. In many cases, words can express much more than a film where parts of the original plot are adapted. But on the other side it can be very important to see how the actors put themselves in the characters place.

Especially the role of Frankenstein as well as the Creature would be interesting, even if the own imagination of the .....
