House of Sand and Fog

Kathy Nicolo, an about 30 years old ex alcoholic, wakes up one morning to be evicted from her house by a lawyer who claims she did not pay her business tax. After she packed her things, with the help of Lester, a deputy officer who seems to be interested in her, she goes to see a solicitor in order to retrieve her property.

In the meanwhile the house was sold to an Irani and his family, who are called Behrani. Infuriated by this fact, Kathy tries even harder to regain her house. While doing so a relationship between her and Lester arises.

The role of Mr Behrani, who buys the house, played by Ben Kingsley, is one of a religious and determined man. He loves his wife and his son, who are everything for him. They once had a bungalow in their home country where Mr Behrani was colonel.

His wife Mrs Behrani, played by Shohreh Aghdashloo still misses this place just like her husband. Hence she feels very comfortable in her new housing, which has some similarities to their old one. Furthermore Mrs Behrani is a very polite and caring person, who does not close the door to a stranger in need.

Jeniffer Connelly plays the role of Kathy as a desperate, because of her loneliness, and selfish woman. Nevertheless Kathy has a good heart and therefore is a character one could easily identify with, if she would not be so bedraggled. Seeing this helplessness Lester, played by Ron Eldard, tries to help her.

However this help of his is not always too helpful, since his actions are partly irrational and badly influenced by his short temper.

All of these actors are starring well. Kingley performs the strictness of a former colonel very credible, with maybe the only flaw, that he is overdoing the military behavior. The most convincing scene of him is when he responds to Lester with the words "This is my home.

Connelly, who plays the other leading part, acts, just as Kingley, almost flawless. The distress that Kathy feels about her allover situation is displayed distinctly to recognize, but in the moment of the awareness that her home would be taken from her, the reaction that is shown is to weak.

Other than that her behavior in front of Lester is fitting perfectly to the situations.

In contrast to Connelly, Ron Eldard is in these scenes way to unemotional. He always acts upon one as if he would not feel anything, which one the one hand is a trait that fits to the character he plays, but on the other hand is to unentertaining and unbelievable in the scenes with Kathy.

The only character that is represented without any slip-ups is the one of Mrs. Behrani. Shohreh Aghdashloo knows how to represent a loving mother, who, even though not being able to understand what is told to her, shows a generous face.

Facing the absolute fear of her life, Shohreh Aghdashloo acts as if her world would break in for real and you will believe her.

The whole story is ingenious, just because of the plainness. Showing that people would lose their minds, because of a house something so elemental, seems at first sight boring, but turns out to be an unbelievable touching plot.

Do never take objects over people. But not only the fundamental of the film is successfully build, but also the make up of the different relationships and the change of characters through out the film. We see how Kathy's fortune raises and falls again and how Mr Behrani slowly changes his order of values in life.

All the acting and the story are completed by the little symbols we perceive in the film, like a golden ring pulled over a dirt stain on a finger.

Altogether a very emotional film, that even reaches those who do not like this genre. The feelings are portrayed so that it is difficult not to share them, especially the sadness. I do recommend this film because it is truly one of the most touching films I have seen so far.
