Part 1

Interpersonal communication is a critical personal attribute of a leader. In our daily life, all of us must have communication with others no matter where. For a leader, interpersonal communication is especially important. A leader needs interpersonal communication to communicate with teammates to accomplish missions.

By Francis (2010), interpersonal communication takes place between two people in any form, includes words, sounds, facial expression, gestures or postures, anywhere. It means interpersonal communication can be easily found in our life. In this essay, the five concepts of interpersonal communication will be discussed.

The first concept is emotional control. It is the ability to respond with the rage of emotions that is tolerable by the society and delay spontaneous reaction as needed. (Cole, Michel & Teti, 1994) A person has better emotional control can manage his emotions when he is under stress or upset.

In a team, conflicts often occur during working or discussion. The team leader is responsible to mediate the conflict. He should control his emotion and keep calm so that deal with the problem without giving an intense response. Otherwise, the conflict cannot be solved or even worse.

If a leader without this ability that he cannot control his emotion well, it will be difficult to cooperate with his team. As his emotion respond cannot be accepted by others, others may dislike this leader and not follow the instructions from the leader. Therefore, a good leader should have well emotional control.

Another concept related to interpersonal communication is active listening. Active listening is the capability to focus on a specific speaker, comprehend their messages and make response.[ CITATION Kap18 \l 1033 ] If a listener does not have active listening skill, the listener may easily distract by other things.

The listener may only know a part of the conversation and misunderstand. As a result, arguments may occur. Therefore, a leader should have active listening skill that he paid full attention to listen so that he can completely understand what others want to express and reduce the chance of misunderstanding w.....[read full text]

Also, the leader has to make decisions frequently. He should trust himself that he is making the right decisions and believe that he can lead the team to finish tasks or overcome obstacles. Thus, a leader without self-esteem cannot lead a team to finish works.

Lastly, empathy is also a necessary element for a leader. Empathy is the capacity to know what other people are experiencing within other’s frame of reference. (Bellet, Maloney & MD, 1991) Everyone has their own emotion and you will not know other’s emotion if you do not have empathy.

Empathy is important for a leader as leader usually need to communicate with their teammates when they need help. Sometimes teammates may feel stressed by a problem and have a bad mood. When a leader has empathy, he will know that his teammate has a bad mood and he will try to comfort him.

If the leader does not have empathy, he will not know what his teammate feels and communicate with him as usual. This may make his mood even worse. So, empathy is necessary for a leader to communicate with others.

A leader with these five concepts under interpersonal communication can have better communication with others. A leader can give instruction to teammate effectively. Thus, all five concepts are necessary for a leader to build up interpersonal communication with teammates.

Therefore, I perform quite good at active listening.

For presentation skill, I think I have the poorest performance among these five concepts. When I was a form 5 students, I am a committee member of the student union. We will have a meeting once a month and talk about the event we will hold in the next month. Each member has to give their opinions on the idea of the events.

I always cannot organise what I have to say. Sometimes others mays misunderstand what I mean and I have to reorganise my speech. This will waste a lot of time. In last semester, I have to do some presentations. Although I can prepare a speech for the content of the presentation, I cannot prepare my speech for the Q&A session.

As I cannot present my idea well, I would use longer time to think and speak in a choppy way. I know that it is not an effective way to present my idea. I have a lot of room for improvement in presentation skill in order to be a leader.

For self-esteem, I think I have a healthy self-esteem. As I am an optimistic person, I seldom feel upset and I always have a positive feeling about myself. After the public exam, HKDSE, my friends always discuss their answer and worry about their performance and their grades.

But I did not worry about that as it passed. We cannot change what has passed. My performance cannot change my feeling easily and I believe in my decision. So, I can build a positive feeling of myself so that I can m.....

But I will try my best to reflect myself and do better so that I can be a potential leader and serve the community in the future.
