Ireland is an island to the northwest of continental Europe.
The island is divided into the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, which is located in the northeast of the island. Dublin is the capital city of the Republic of Ireland.

The currency is the Euro. The population of Ireland is approximately 6,4 million people. Just 4,6 million live in the Republic of Ireland and fewer than 1,8 million live in Northern Ireland. The Island is located in the temperate climate zone. It rains very often and every Irish person is carrying an umbrella with him.

Ireland covers an area of 81,638 km².The official languages are English and Gaelic.

The two main religious groups are Protestants and Catholics. They have had troubles in the past.

There are many hills covered with grass. The grass is green like the national colour of Ireland and the clover which is a national symbol. Sheep are typical for the characteristic landscape of Ireland.

Culture

The Irish cuisine is mainly based on meat. Popular are also Irish breads and scones; other traditional dishes consist of bacon and cabbage or a cake-like bread called barmbrack and a filled pancake, called boxty.

The Irish mainly drink Guinness, the national beer, and tea with milk. Ireland is also famous for its Whiskey. There is also Irish coffee which is a mixture of coffee, whiskey, brown sugar and whipped cream. But Irish coffee isn’t an Irish tradition because it’s mainly offered only in touristic hotels and restaurants.

Pubs can be found all over Ireland. There is one in every street corner. And that has a reason because pubs are plainly the main meeting places of the Irish but, smoking is not permitted in any pub. Guinness is undoubtedly Dublin's most famous export. People can listen to an interesting exhibition on the history of Guinness and the brewing process. The Brewery was leased of Arthur Guinness in 1759.
