John Fowles’ short story – “The Enigma”

Summary

John Fowles’ short story “The Enigma“, which is one of five stories in his book “The Ebony Tower” (1974), deals with the mysterious disappearance of John Marcus Fielding. The investigation, executed by sergeant Micheal Jennings, uncovers important facts about Fieldings life, his relationship to his family and work and also similarities between Fielding and Jennings himself.

Mr Fieldings disappearance came suddenly out of nothing. His normal and experienced behaviour did not let anyone expect that something like that will happen. As a rich and happily married father of three children, houseowner and countryside-lover, Conservative Member of Parliament and accepted man of society, it seemed he lived a perfect and well-structured life without any trouble.

When he disappeared, his wife tried everything that was in her power, from calling friends around town, letting the flat at Knightsbridge check and finally informing the police, to find her husband. Nothing of that leads to success. It was still unsolved, why he was missing. They did not even know if he was kidnapped or murdered, committed suicide or just left without informing anybody and would return in some days.

As the police interrogated Mrs Parsons, who is Mr Fieldings long-time secretary, they found out that he surely did not leave the country because of the passports still being in his office. They excluded any kind of kidnapping or political committed crime, but also after interviewing several people they did not come on with the investigation. Ten days after the disappearance he was tacitly declared dead.

The police now only provided one officer, Sergeant Michael Jennings, for the .....[read full text]

He had to wait until she came back from visiting her sister in Paris, but they then immediately had a meeting. He fell in love from the point he saw her. She wore a fancy white dress and it was the hottest day in the year so far. They went for a little walk and Jennings asked her all the questions he already had asked all the other persons who were in contact to Fielding.

The answers she gave him were quite the same he already heard, but he went further and talked about her own private feelings towards Mr Fielding and how she felt he had been. She denied the speculation that Fielding was attracted to her, but she also did not know how to describe his attitude towards her. She always felt a bit unwell when they met; maybe because she did not want to be put in the daughter-in-law situation Fielding woul.....
