The War of the WorldsBy H.G. Wells

Introduction:

This story is about a man who lives in the late 19th century and becomes a witness of terrible event, there has been an attack on earth by the Martians, which they started in Great Britain. Fortunately, it did not spread over the whole world. We follow the narrator (the main character in this story, his name is unknown to us) on his journey in the war whit the Martians.

On his way trying to survive he meets an Artilleryman, with whom he spends some time, both hiding from the Martians, but finally they separate their ways. Later on the narrator meets a curate who believes this is a sign from God. The curate gets killed by the Martians and the narrator continue his way towards London which is completely empty and in some parts destroyed.

After all this, the narrator just goes on to search the Martians to kill them himself, but when he arrives there all the Martians are already dead. You may ask yourself who killed them, was it the military? Or another alien species? No, it is quite simple: the Martians got killed by Bacteria.

It seems that the immune system saved the human species.

Writing style:

The writing style of H.G. Wells is like a mystery, because when you are reading the book you are always expecting to get a hint of the back story of some character but You are just left hanging there for the whole time till the end comes and you think, You come out with less knowledge over the character as when you started.

But luckily You will know one name which is pretty rare for Wells and this name is Ogilvy.

Genre:

The main genre that Wells chooses is Science-Fiction. He also uses Scientific Romance, that let you know that is was there but you did not notice it that often, it only comes into play when the narrator thinks about his wife, when he see that she is safe or is killed by the Martians.

The Science-Fiction is for the time very impressive but in some ways Wells make it too easy for himself. For example “the ships” on which the Martians arrive are simple Cylinders what is not that impressive but it somehow works out.

The Influence:

Wells was a big influence to the early 20th Century, because it was never done before that aliens existed in books. This is why this book blew peoples mind, they have never thought that they were not alone in the Universe (which is in today`s society impossible to believe).

But Wells was not the only person to write a science-fiction book there was also Jules Verne who wrote the famous book Journey to the Center of the Earth and many more.

Characters:

Mainly Wells has not brought very much on the table, but the advantage of this is that thought there are not a lot of characters, they are completely different from one other, which makes for a perfect change while you are reading the book.

Here are some examples for the difference between all the characters.

The Narrator:

First we have the narrator he is a philosopher and a hobbyist astronomer: You notice right away that Wells is playing the narrator and with that it is quite easy to say that the narrator is basically his favourite out of the characters. It might be possible that Wells wanted to play a big part in his own book and that this may be the reason why he does not give this character a name and also because the brother in the book is also just known as the brother of the narrator.

The Martians:

Wells describes the Martians as aggressive, merciless, mentally, scientifically, and technologically advanced Alien species trying to flee from their dying planet. They are conquerors from the get-go and they make it clear to the Earth’s populace that co-habitation is not an option for them, attacking with advanced weapons such as heat rays and biological agents.

Human weapons are useless against their war machines and they attack indiscriminately. Martians greatly resemble earth because of their tentacles and radial symmetry. They feed upon humans by grotesquely draining them of bodily fluids then injecting it directly into themselves.

Despite all their advancements a common strain of Earth bacteria kills them all.

Ogilvy:

Ogilvy is one of the first few to take notice of the Martians and he begins by investigating a meteor that turns out to be a Martian “cylinder” or transport tube, but he is initially sceptical of his findings. It is unsurprising that he will be one of the first to realize the curious movements on Mars, as he is an astronomer.

The Narrator`s brother:

A character not directly mentioned but rather spoken of through the Narrator. He is medical student and his story is told to narrate the events that take place in London. The Narrator reports that Brother met up with the Narrator’s Wife and another character, George Elphinstone’s sister and they decide to travel together after escaping London.

Brother is a sensible, prudent character. He also proves himself to be a critical thinker and a morally upright fellow, refusing to pick up money scattered on the ground realizing that currency is now obsolete and that picking up the money would cost them crucial time.

This treatment of money as a passé trapping of the former world order proves to be correct as it allows them to escape just as a Martian patrol comes upon a man gathering money---he is promptly vaporized with heat rays as he tries to pocket the useless trinkets…

Would I recommend this book?

I definitely would recommend this book That almost any person beside Those who love to know the secrets or the hustory of the characters, then it is not a book for Them. The novel is well structured, there are not to many characters so That you might get confused, but also no to less, so that one get bored after 10 pages.

This book is not made for those who would like to know the characters which they are following on their journey.
