Kumon-Tutor School Institution

Kumon is the world’s largest after-school math and reading academic enrichment program. It expands to the United States, Canada, England, Australia and other countries, including 47countries around the world.Currently, there are more than 28,000 centers around the world with more than 4 million students.

Kumon is the learning system which is regarded as the most effective and is becoming a form of education for the 21st century.

Kumon is a math and reading program intended to supplement rather than replace school lessons. Students do not work together as a class, but progress through the curriculum at their own pace, moving on to the next level when they have achieved mastery of the previous level.

Students are guided by trained Kumon Instructors and Assistants. Mastery is defined as speed (using a standard completion time) and accuracy. They take an achievement test at the end of each level. The ratio between the time the student takes on the test and the number of mistakes will determine which group level the student will be in on the test.

For opening the Kumon Centers, instructors must conclude the franchise agreement with the major subsidiaries in each country. Because no anyone that has money can open the Centers, it will choose only instructors that have the proper qualifications.

Kumon believes that the instructors are the heart and soul of Kumon therefore it provides the highest levels of support and training to all instructors.

Kumon seeks those who can encourage, impel, and coach children towards happiness through learning so the instructors who will operate the Kumon Center have to love working with children, and love to see them learn. Moreover, the instructors of the Kumon Method must have well-established roots in the community.

Kumon offers learning opportunities in 47 different countries and regions around the world. For the countries in ASEAN that it sets up the subsidiaries are Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, and Vietnam. There are only 3 countries in ASEAN that are Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei which Kumon does not set up.

Offering educational enrichment for children from preschool through 12th grade, Kumon combines its time-tested program of daily practice with a study program that allows students to advance at their own pace.

Kumon Learning Centers represent some of the lowest costs of entry of any supplemental learning franchise. Actual costs depend on the Kumon franchise location, but the initial investment required to open a franchise starts as low as about $67,000. Franchisees do not need teaching degrees, but they must possess a passion for working with children and delivering the Kumon Learning Method in an efficient manner in order to improve reading comprehension and math ability.

Franchisees go through extensive training on the Kumon Method, with continuing education and conference opportunities for instructors.

Expasion in ASEAN

Although at the present, Kumon does not still have a plan to open the Kumon Centers in those 3 countries which are Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei in 2013, it does not mean in the future that may be 5-6 years will not have the Centers in those countries.

If you look at its long-term vision “We wish that all people in all countries and regions in the world will have the opportunity to learn with the Kumon Method, and that each individual in the world will be enthusiastically self-learning and making efforts towards realising his or her goals and dreams.”, you will know that Kumon tries to expand the subsidiaries to around the world including the countries in ASEAN that it does not expand now.

I have some information that I can find about Kumon’s expansion in ASEAN countries to show you:

1986 - Malaysia

1987 - Singapore (In April 1995, the first office opens in Singapore.)

1991 - Thailand

Kumon can achieve the plans because it adapts the teaching to proper with the children in each country. As a result, the Kumon Method has remained consistent for over 50 years and has been accepted in many countries despite differences in lifestyle, educational system, and culture.

The major competitiveness of the business operations, its growth prospect, and opportunity for international market expansion

For Kumon’s growth prospect, the first Kumon Center outside of Japan was set up in New York in 1974. Since then, Kumon Centers have spread to 47 different countries and regions. Moreover, it also operates to set up the subsidiaries around the world continuously. This shows that Kumon’s franchise business grow rapidly in many countries.

Therefore, it has many opportunities for international market expansion. Because nowadays most of people more realize the importance of education, I think educational industry will grow up at increasing rate. Moreover, it still has many countries that Kumon can expand the market because it does not set up the subsidiaries in those countries.
