Portfolio – One of Us is lying by Karen M. Mcmanus

Summary

The book “One of Us is lying”, written by Karen M. Mcmanus and published on the 29th of May 2017, is about four teenagers who get suspected for murder. Brownwyn, Nate, Addy and Cooper get into detention because of someone who put cell phones in their bags. During detention Simon, the fifth person there and the inventor of a web site called “About That” which spreads rumors and secrets of students, dies due to an allergic reaction to nut oil when he drinks a cup of water.

After this, the other teenagers get suspected for killing Simon and their whole life turns around. They now are surrounded by detectives, huge media coverage and many accusations. During the investigation many drafts about the four suspected students on Tumblr and on “About that” is found.

Brownwyn’s cheating in chemistry, Nate selling drugs, Addy cheating on her boyfriend Jack, and Cooper getting outed. The teenagers’ lawyers recommend them to avoid each other in favour of the investigation and other false accusations but the four of them decide to stick together (especially Brownwyn and Nate who got really close to each other) and to find the murder of Simon and to end this whole situation.

At the end Simon’s best friend exposes Jack to Addy who knew about her cheating on him and he had to follow Simon’s instructions to destroy and to expose the four of them.

Brownwyn Rojas

One of the main characters in the book is Brownwyn Rojas. She is one of the top students in school and she’s extremely clever. Brownwyn is a child of ambitious parents and has a sister who was diagnosed with cancer. I chose her because in my opinion she went through a huge and great character development in the book.

At first she seemed to me as if she would follow her parents in everything, she didn’t date, was learning a lot and was the perfect daughter material. After she got closer to Nate, she kind of broke out from her comfort zone and her parents’ rules, she got a “taste” of how life of others might be and that she shouldn’t judge someone.

Also the relationship of these two proved that opposites attract each other while staying true to oneself.

Blurb

Original

The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars, One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide. Pay close attention and you might solve this.

On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention. Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule. Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess. Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing. Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.

And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High's notorious gossip app. Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention, Simon's dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn't an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he'd planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder.

My interpretation

Four popular teenagers. Four destructive secrets. One exposing app. One death. Who is the murder? Brownwyn, Addy, Nate and Cooper are obligated to face huge consequences of being in the same room with the inventor of the most destructive web site of Bayview High alias Simon Kelleher who dies in the circle of these four students.

False accusations, being surrounded by detectives and huge media coverage. But what was the reason for the murder to end Simon’s life? What had this person to hide? Cheating? Drug abuse? Or better, being afraid of getting outed? Everyone has his reason, especially victims.

Letter to the writer

Dear Mrs. Mcmanus,

I am writing because I read your book “One of Us is lying” and I really loved it. I would like to give you my impressions about it.

Furthermore, I was impressed by the characters as all of them were different and I believe everyone could find themselves in them. You also raised awareness to important and sensitive topics such as sexual orientation and drug abuse which was very admirable for me as it represents how many people react to these kind of things.

Summarized, I really enjoyed reading this book because it not just included important topics but also was very interesting and captivating.

Thank you for your attention and I am looking forward to read more books written by you.

Yours sincerely, Napsugár

The book that gives us everything!

by napsixlm / 27th of May 2019 / 14:15

Hi guys,

I’ve never done this before but now that I finished the book “One of Us is lying” by Karren M. Mcmanus, I want to write an overview of the lecture and my opinion on it.

In my opinion, this book was one of the best books I’ve ever read in my life (I’m not exaggerating!). To me, it’s very impressive that Mcmanus wasn’t afraid of building controversial/important topics into this story because many people are clueless how they are supposed to act in this kind of cases or when it comes to for example homosexuality in general as they’ve never really had to do anything with it.

Also the book itself represents how hard it is for many students, of course we aren’t murders but we can read about everyday struggles we normally have to deal with.

I really do recommend this book to every person at every age! If you’ve already read “One of Us is lying”, what is your opinion on it? Feel free to leave a comment!

Cover Comparison

Cover on the right

This cover is more creative in my opinion. It seems more serious and mysterious as the other one and very rarified. Even though there aren’t “hidden” clues or meanings, if I saw a book with a this kind of cover, I would rather buy this one than other one because of its minimalism.
