Run, Mummy, Run

Cathy Glass

The book Run, Mummy, Run, by Cathy Glass, which was released in 2011 by the publisher Harper, is divided into 30 chapters. In 300 pages it tells the story of a young woman’s journey through an abyss of violence, cruelty and degradation by her own husband.

By the age of 29 Aisha has achieved everything she ever wanted in her life and is now a successful businesswoman in London. But suddenly she realizes that there is one thing missing in her life, a man. Being always concentrated on her career she never made the acquaintance of anybody in her town and is totally inexperienced in love.

But then she spots an ad in the paper and spontaneously decides to reply. That’s how she meets Mark, also successful in work but not as much in love. He has already been married once and has been living together with another woman for 5 years. Why both relationships came to an end Aisha comes to know only later.

After a brief courtship she agrees on marrying the man of her dreams and is soon expecting their first child Sarah and just a few years later the second, James. Everything is working out so well for them until Aisha comes home from hospital and her husband beats her for the first time. And it will not be the last.

Day by day Mark treats her worse and even bans her from keeping contact with her parents to whom she once was so close. With no money and in constant fear she is imprisoned in her own home for seven years. Until one rainy evening when she finally has the strength to escape.

But as she is driving in Mark’s car on the highway with their kids on the backseat she spots her husband just a few cars behind her and apparently trying to catch up with her. She decides to set an abrupt end to all this and piles Mark, who dies immediately.

Finally disenthralled she still has to deal with remorse. But as she finds out more about Mark’s past full of dishonesty she comes to terms with herself and starts a new life.

There aren't many books which would have me hooked from the very first page, but this is certainly one of them. Within two days -full of compassion by the way- I read all of it and was totally relieved as it all turned out well.

The fact that the novel is based on a true story raised my interest and shocked me at the same time. I never read or thought a lot about this argument. It always seemed to me to be a problem that only other cultures, like the Muslim, have. This book totally changed my mind and showed me, that unfortunately it can happen everywhere and to anyone.

Favorite passage

,While you have been sleeping these two days, Aisha, I have spent a lot of time standing here, thinking. I remembered the time we watched the eclipse together. I don’t suppose you remember it, you were only three or four. You were very scared as the birds stopped singing and the day turned to night.

I tried to explain that the sun hadn’t gone forever and it would return. But you didn’t believe me, not until it happened. Then as the sun slowly slid into view again and the light gradually returned, your little face was a picture. You were so happy. “we are alive,” you cried. “There is a tomorrow.” I will never forget it, Aisha!’

With this memory out of Aisha’s childhood he reminds her of him being her father and lets her know that there is still and always somebody who takes care of her. I really liked the way he tells her and I could exactly imagine the scene. But what I found most appealing about this passage is the metaphor he makes.

We should always remember that sooner or later it is going to get better when we’re feeling down.

“Absolutely brilliant read. Cathy Glass deserves great acclaim for this wonderful book that had my heart racing and my mouth dry with fear. An astonishingly good read that I simply couldn't put down. “,says Sara, a reviewer on Amazon.
