Safe Haven  by Nicholas Sparks

Author, Setting, Main Characters, Content, Theme, Trailer

Nicholas Sparks:

The author of the book is Nicholas Sparks.

He was born on 31st December, 1965.

He is known as one of the most beloved story tellers. He lives in Nort Carolina with his family.

His first novel was The Notebook, which was written in 1995. You also might heard of his other books:

Dear John, The Lucky One, The Last Song, etc …

He does have more books, but i chose this book, because of its great movie.

Setting:

There are two settings in the book.

The one is a small town of Southport, North Carolina. Where she lived in a little cottage on a dirt road with only one neighbor.

But mostly the setting is in the sights of Southport:

→ in the beach, local restaurants, and of course

the town store that Alex owns, and Katie's

    home

The other setting is the city Boston, where Erin lived with her husband, Kevin.

Main Characters:

Erin is the main character in the book and is married to Kevin, but she wishes she wasn't. Kevin works for Boston Police. He is also an alcoholic who drinks on the job and everywhere else. He is an abusive husband. Erin isn't allowed to leave the house without him.

If she does or says something he does not like he hits her. When she escapes her abusive husband she changes her name to Katie, cuts her long hair off and dyes it.

Alex is a widowed dad with two kids. His wife dies when their kids were young. He owns a little grocery store where people can get gas and lots of other things. This is also where he first met Katie. Josh is the older one and he loves to fish. Kristin is not in school yet.

She loves playing with dolls and colouring pictures. Alex makes sure they know and always remember who their mother was because she was great.

Jo is Katie's neighbor. They grow to have a close friendship. They come together to talk and have a glass of wine. Katie tells her all about Alex and how she thinks she likes him. Jo is a great listener and gives great advice. She's always there  to help Katie out when needed.

Katie comes to a small town in North Carolina called Southport. There she has a little, old abandoned(=lonely) cottage. She doesn’t seem like she wants to talk much to people, and she especially doesn’t want to talk about her past.

She starts out working at Ivan’s, the main restaurant that all the locals eat at, where she made her living. She always went down to the local grocery store owned by a man named Alex with his two kids, Josh and Kristin. Her only friend is her neighbor next door, Jo.

She’s always wanting to talk, and is nice to Katie. Katie had brown hair and was weak and she was thin to the bone. She never really had a lot of money which makes you wonder about her past. She would go to the grocery store and try to find the cheapest food items as possible. Alex took notice to her, and couldn't keep his eyes off of her.

Finally Alex’s daughter Kristen started to talk to Katie about her picture she drew, and as Katie got more talkative to her, Alex became more talkative as well. Alex and Katie became „good friends“. They would go on dates, and do activities with the kids. Jo was the first person that Katie started to unfold (=open up) her tragic past to.

I won't tell you the end, because I want you to read the book or to watch the movie.

Theme:

Life may throw you challenges, but that is no reason to stop moving forward .

I say this because Katie goes through a lot of things in her life. Through the abuse of Kevin she never stopped going. She always thought things would get better. Then she realized that they wouldn’t, so she had to get away from the abuse.

Through the challenges of dealing with Kevin, she moved on to make her life better. Also, Katie didn't have much money, but that didn't stop her. She worked hard for her money, but it paid off. Through it all Alex helped her to keep moving forward, and not to worry about Kevin.

Trailer:
