So I was told to be the first one who does the Newsbeat which I am going to do now. My topic is the Tesla cars which – in a recent update – are able to drive without the need to have the hands on the wheel. The technology which makes that even possible is called autopilot.

First of all what are Tesla cars even? The Tesla Model S which is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 nigga real quick in 3.0 seconds is the top selling plug-in electric car in the U.S. with about 17,700 units sold in the first nine month of 2015. It has one electric engine for each wheel which added up come to a total of 762 horse powers in a fully electric car.

Now: What are the features of autopilot?

The first one is called Autosteer which lets you take your hands of the wheel without crashing into the next house. What it does is keeping you in the current lane by adjusting steering angle, steering rate and speed of the car. So if you let of the wheel it will steer, brake and even accelerate for you if you set the speed at which you want to drive.

The next feature is Auto Lane Change which already describes itself with the name. When autopilot is activated you just have to hold the turn signal and the car will move itself to the adjacent lane when it’s safe to do so.

It also has Side Collision Warning which alerts the driver about objects such as cars that are too close to the sides of the car, when this is the case the driver will also be alerted visually on the user interface which will look like this: Picture – Sensors

One of the features everybody likes is Autopark which will detect parking spots when driving at low speeds in the city. If it detected a good spot the driver will be notified with a “P” in the user interface and is then able to press a button to begin parking. Once activated the car will control steering and the speed to fit in the spot perfectly. Picture – Autopark

In the car are 3 elements that make it work.

First of all the forward looking radar which can see though fog, smoke, snow and even sand. This makes the car be able to detect the cars in front of it and follow them in a long range.

Then there is a camera installed that is able to see the lane stripes and speed signs. In future updates it can even read stop signs and traffic signs to drive fully autonomous. Today it is still required to manually drive the car in cities. The camera also serves as a backup system for the radar.

The third element is a 360° Long Range Sonar which can also detect soft objects like humans or animals. It will also tell you if there is something in the blind spots or if there is a barrier on the road. It will basically tell you everything you could eventually move into.

All this was installed with an over the air update from Tesla which took about 2.15 hours to download. Imagine having a nice car already and then you go to sleep and wake up in the morning and all of the sudden the car can drive without you having to steer it. You then ask yourself how that would feel? Well, ask a Tesla owner, he will tell you how it feels.

Over time there will not be a need to have your hands on the wheel.” And “The driver cannot abdicate responsibility for driving the vehicle.”
