Sports teams, clubs, events and venues in Edinburgh and Glasgow
I am going to tell you in which different
sports the cities are represented.
This involves the sports teams, clubs,
events and the most important
venues of the cities.
Edinburgh: The multisided city of
sports
There are two important football clubs in
Edinburgh, playing in the Scottish
Premier League. The first is the Hibernian
FC, it was founded in 1875, its stadium is
the Easter Road and their biggest rival is
also the second football club of Edinburgh,
the Heart of Midlothian FC, also known as
the Hearts FC, which was founded in
1874, consequently it is the oldest football
club of Edinburgh because of a one year
difference. Its stadium is the Tynecastle
stadium. The Edinburgh Capitals are an Ice
Hockey club, which is the follower club of
the Murrayfield Racers team. Since the
season 2005/2006 the club has been a member
of the Elite Ice Hockey League. They
play at the Murrayfield Ice Rink.
Really close to this ice stadium you can
find the
national rugby Murrayfield Stadium. And
there are also a lot of Rugby clubs in
Edinburgh, the Edinburgh Rugby, is the most
important. The club plays in the
Magners League, the most professional rugby
league. Further nameable
Glaswegian rugby clubs are the Boroughmuir
RFC, the Currie RFC and the Heriot's
RFC. A traditional golf club which has to
be listed is the Honourable Company of
Edinburgh Golfers. This club got its
beginnings in 1744 and is located in Muirfield,
East Lothian nowadays. There is still a
further historic sports club to be named, the
Grange Club, founded in 1832. It involves
five further clubs: Tennis, Men's Hockey,
Ladies Hockey, Squash and Cricket. To
finish this section there is one last important
event left. Since 2003 Edinburgh has hosted
the Edinburgh Marathon. It is the
second largest marathon in Britain and it attracts
masses of people.
Glasgow: The multifaceted city of
sports
Now I will go on with the most important
sports teams, clubs, events and venues of
Glasgow. The main importance of sports in
Glasgow is based on the Old Firm
between the Catholic football club Celtic
Glasgow and the Protestant football club
Glasgow Rangers, like I already mentioned
referring to the social situation. The Celtic
Glasgow exists since 1887 and its stadium
is the Celtic Park. The Glasgow Rangers
were founded in 1872 and the club plays in
the Ibrox Stadium. Both clubs are
registered in the Scottish Premier League.
Two more Glaswegian football clubs are
worth to be listed. One of these is a
further professional club, the Partick Thistle FC,
founded in 1876, they play in the Firhill
Stadium and are registered in the First
Division. A further football club, is an
amateur club playing in the third division, the
Queen's Park FC. It was founded in 1867 and
its stadium is the Hampden Park, the
Scottish national stadium. The most
important Glaswegian rugby club are the
Glasgow Warriors, which play in the Magners
League. The Glasgow Hawks, the
Glasgow Hutchesons' Aloysians, the West of
Scotland and the Hillhead Jordanhill are
further rugby clubs of Glasgow, which play
in the amateur class. The only
professional Scottish basketball team are
the Glasgow Rocks. The club was founded
in Edinburgh in 1998 and it moved to
Glasgow in 2002. The games take place in the
Kelvin Hall. Moreover the Glasgow Tigers
are a Glaswegian motorcycle speedway
team, which exists since 1946 with this
nickname, but there has been speedway in
Glasgow since 1928. The Glasgow Tigers
currently ride at Ashfield. Very interesting
is also the Boat Club, one of the oldest
sporting clubs of the University of Glasgow.
Rowing, especially on the River Clyde is a
really traditional sport in Glasgow and it
was the main important sport for the
public, before the interest for football increased.
Two major international sporting arenas
should be named, the Kelvin Hall and the
Scotstoun Sports Centre. In 2003 Glasgow
was given the title of European Capital
of Sport. A very
special sport event is going to take place in Glasgow in 2014, the
Commonwealth Games. It is an event with 17
different sports, which makes it really
multifaceted. It involves combatant sports,
ball games, athletics, aquatics and a lot of
other special sports.
Comparison of sports teams, clubs,
events and venues
A lot of different kinds of sports are
represented and the public prefers football in
both cities. There are a lot of
professional clubs in Edinburgh and in Glasgow. There
are also a lot of stadiums in both cities,
which are multi-faceted, so all kinds of sports
are practised. Next to the obvious popular
sports like football and rugby, there are
also traditional sports like golf,
especially in Edinburgh, or rowing, especially in
Glasgow.
