Einleitung:

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen! My Name is … and the topic of today's presentation is: Gera as an economic location.

My presentation is in five parts. I want to talk about some information about Gera, the sectors of the economy, Training facilities, examples of location factors and my conclusion. At the end, I will try to give an answer to the question: Gera - innovative and worthy to live! Is that true?

welcome:

Welcome to Gera – my hometown. Home of about 100.000 inhabitants, Gera is a regional centre in East Thuringia. About 450.000 people live in the catchment area. My hometown is only 20 kilometres away from Hermsdorfer Kreuz which is the intersection of the transport axes A9 Berlin-Munich and A4 Dresden-Frankfurt.

Moreover, Gera has an airfield in  the city district Leumnitz. Still, the federal roads B2, B9, and B92 are nearby. International airports like Altenburg-Nobitz, Leipzig-Halle and Erfurt are located within 100 kilometres of Gera.

past:

The roots of textile industry go back to the 14th century. Thanks to the industrialization prozess within the 19th century, Gera gained mainly engineering and textile engineering significance. At this moment, Gera was the heyday of textile and cloth industry and became one of the richest cities in Germany. About100partiallysignificantmansionsstill testify tothe splendorandrichness of thistime.

New world-class products emerged in the 20th century.. Precision equipment and electronics went around the world. The WISMUT promoted uranium ore in the nearby Ronneburg.

present:

The existing cooperation network of business and science predetermines the city of Gera to invest primarily in the auto-parts supply industry, environmental technology, mechanical engineering and optical industry.

Automotive suppliers of Gera benefit from the nearby automotive regions West Thuringia, Bavaria and Saxony, for example VW locatede in Zwickau, BMW + Porsche located in Leipzig.

The supply industry in Gera has a market potential which is enormous.

Gera has a remarkable company potential for optics and excellent relations to neighbouring precision opicts stronghold Jena.

The market for innovative technologies is becoming more interesting, especially in the context of the revitalisation of the post-mining landscape of uranium-ore mining.

training facilities:

Gera benefits from a unique education environment. Practical educational opportunities will find company in Gera in the vocational Academy, the SRH Fachhochschule für Gesundheit, the Grundig Akademie and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

On 1st October 2007, the Private SRH Fachhochschule für Gesundheit (a health-sector company training apprentices) opened with four fields of study: Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Interdisciplinary Early Intervention and Medical Pedagogy, and had 85 students at the beginning. Currently they are training over 800 students.

The radio broadcast and television technology pioneer Max Grundig opened the charity foundation Grundig Akademie in 1978 in Nürnberg. Since 1991 trainees and students attend certified full-time or parttime two- or four-year vocational courses in Gera for future careers as certified technicians in the mechanical engineering, mechatronic, electronic and business management areas.

Together with more than 1.500 business partners side by side, the State Academy Thuringia operates the Universities of Cooperative Education Gera and Eisenach which offer three-year-courses in Business Administration, Engineering, Information Technology and Social Pedagogy / Social Work. Presently, 1.600 students are registered at both locations, sent by the co-educating firms, gain scientific knowledge in 22 specialisations and improve their practical skills by training on the job, too.

In the interests ofeconomyandwith a broad networkofvolunteer work, politics and organizations, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce todaypartnerof thecompanyandsupporttheregionsin eastern Thuringia. Newjob profiles, qualified professionals, effective networks, successful innovations, unbureaucraticinvestment, entry into new marketsoraddressingeconomic difficulties-theChamber of Industry and Commerce is committed to.

Based on some factors I would like to show how companies evaluate Gera. On the sideof theadvantagesI want to examinethe availability oftraining opportunities and medical supply. On the side of the disadvantages I would like to examine the economic development of the free State of Thuringia and attractiveness of the city.

availability oftraining opportunities:

This graph shows that over 80% of the companies with the availability of training opportunities are satisfied to rather satisfied. From this, we can conclude that the training offers in the independent city could be adjusted the best to the needs of business.

medical supplies:

Thenextgraphicshows the evaluation ofcompanies in themedical supply in East Thuringia. As you can see, Gera was well rated under these points of view. As a maximum care hospital, the SRH Waldklinikum offers a wide range of medical. 300 physicians, 700 nurses and caregivers and more specialists are there around the clock for the patients.

Small note: the SRH Waldklinikum is the first cultural hospital of Germany.

economic development of the free state of Thuringia:

If you look at this graph, you can see that the companies evaluate the economic development by the free State of Thuringia in Gera with the worst. The promotion policy of the free State of Thuringia was all too often influenced to bureaucratic, little predictable and intransparent boundary conditions in the funding allocation in the past few years. Thus, theeconomically weak regionswerelesspromoted andthe focus wasmoreonurban areas.

attractiveness of the city:

An attractivecityis characterizedbya high degree ofdynamismand vitality. The more attractivea cityis, the more likely itisforcompaniesa chancetomeetwiththepeople living heretheir staffing needs. Companies fromGeraaretheattractiveness of theircitythe most dissatisfied. Only a quarter ofGeracompany is"satisfied" or "fairly satisfied" as opposed toJena.

Gera can shine in addition to the aforementioned points with the deals on child care, the availability of housing, the supply of public transport and shopping. However, nowhere else so many companies with the height of the commercial and property tax or availability of free trade areas are unhappy. Still, Gera cannot score with its economic framework conditions. The economic development of the city or the entrepreneurial experience in de management is criticized in this area.

There, hardly as negative assessment surprised the attractive power of Geras and location marketing.

Tourism is an important economic factor. But due to the financial situation of the Tourism Association is dissolved and the city is trying on a provisional. Although a small tourist information point is built up in the waiting area of the city services, but locals and strangers nowhere find what they expect.

The financial situation is dramatic. Finances of the country are not enough for Gera

The city would need only one-third of the expected to be available for the financial aid package of Thuringia. About 21 to 25 million euro are missing from the city budget. Necessary investments in schools and infrastructure are not possible.

Myopinion: Geradoesn’t manageon their own.
