Stieg Larsson – The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest

The Girl who kicked the hornet’s nest is the final part of the Millenium Trilogy. It ends the story and gives us all the missing parts. Through the several different themes occur and Stieg Larrson shows some problems, we have face in today’s world. One of the biggest ideas of the book is to show the problem of inequality, discrimination and violence against women.

It shows the problem that women are forced to do “women’s things/work” and men are doing men’s work. All men appearing in the book are strong and are working for example as lawyers or doctors. Women are mothers or nurses. Only the main character, Lisbeth Salander, breaks this rule.

She is a strong, fighting character; a warrior that is looking for revenge against those men who mistreated her. The only problem that she has with that is that she’s trying to get this revenge outside of the law. This leads us to the second idea: Justice, judgment, and lies.

Salander is judged by the media and police as a murderer and psychopath that has to be locked away. Media plays a big role in the book and only Journalist Blomkvist believes in her innocence. However, later in the book Salander uses the laws and the court as a tool to get what she wants.

Another big theme is technology. Salander is a hacker and uses it to find out the truth and win the court case at the end. She also types her whole story on her phone while she’s imprisoned in the hospital, waiting for her court case. Without technology she wouldn’t be able to get the revenge she seeks.

The last big theme is tattoos and appearance. Tattoos are a way to express something, to let people know something, and a metaphor for freedom. After she gets raped, she tattoos “I am a sadistic pig, a pervert, and a rapist” on the belly of the rapist, so everybody who gets close to him can see this.

I think the most interesting ideas are today’s media, technology, and the tattoos. Media has a huge impact on and huge power over people. It almost seems like media is controlling justice. But than, Salander wouldn’t be able to win without media. Without her journalist friend she wouldn’t have a chance.

Technology is really everywhere in this book and mainly used as evidence for Salander. I think the author is really trying to say that technology changed the world and not really in a negative way. Through technology we have new ways to guarantee justice. The Tattoos and appearance theme is really interesting because it says allot about society.

And this is what I think why Stieg Larsson wrote this book.

Of course he wrote this book to finish the story, but he also tried to say something. But mainly he tried to say something about society and justice. Tattoos are one of best examples for wrong judgment. Salander is a very smart and intellectual person who knows what to say.

Her appearance doesn’t fit these characteristics at first and especially in the court it doesn’t seem appropriate. But if you think about it again you’ll notice that she’s a warrior, a rebel that fights for her own ideal. That fits with her different appearance. She is a strong woman in a world that treats women and men different.

I would definitely recommend this book after you read the first two parts.  Without the knowledge of the first two parts it is really hard to understand and to follow the plot. But with the knowledge it is an interesting and thrilling book with an engrossing storyline about a person’s call for revenge.

It gives you all the details you were looking for in the first two parts and an end that should satisfy every reader. Furthermore it brings up some serious thoughts about society, justice and even friendship. These ideas are well integrated in the story and let you think afterwards.
