The Power of Grit
The TED talk “Grit: The power of passion and perseverance” mainly focuses on the power of grit, which leads to final success and achievements. The speaker starts the talk with her own story. She quitted the job in management consulting and became a 7th grade math teacher in a public school in New York.
And during her teaching experiences, she was surprised to find out that IQ was not the only difference between her good and bad students and it actually wasn not IQ that decided whether a student could do well on subjects.
Then she went to study psychology, started to conduct studies on kids and adults in challenging settings and made researches over military school cadets, students, rookie teachers and salespeople, making predictions of would be more successful in the end. According to her research, what affects people most is not intelligence, looks, physical health, but grit.
She makes a research in the Chicago public schools and comes to the conclusion that grittier kids are more likely to graduate. As a significant predictor of success, grit can help us conquer difficulties and go on with our studies and lives. Despite the fact that scientists can now still not know how to build up grit and keep people motivated, they find out that grit is not usually related to talent and it can be changed.
