The woman and the war.

On the threshold of the seventieth anniversary of the Great Victory, the whole mankind is to honor the memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic War and the World War II.

For its purpose, the Russian director Sergey Mokritsky presented a new film named “The Battle of Sevastopol” which unveils the fate of an average woman, almost a girl, who was to set her life on stake during the Great Patriotic War.

Frankly speaking, a war film is not the genre of my own. As exceptions, I should mention two war films I was impressed by – “The Pianist” and “The Schindler’s List”. The main distinguishing feature of them is anthropocentricity of plot which means that those films are not just about the war and battlefield, but about people who suffer during that period.

Catching the title “The Battle of Sevastopol” for the first time, I imagined scenes of battlefields, military equipment against the background of Sevastopol’s picturesque landscapes. But it turned out to be a kind of biographical movie about the most famous woman-sniper of the Soviet Army.

The story begins with the next scene - Eleanor Roosevelt visits Moscow in the late 50’s. She postpones the meeting with Nikita Khrushchev to pay the main character Lyudmila Pavlichenko a visit. Then the scene shifts to 30’s - Lyudmila enters the university, she is young and full of hopes.

For the first time, she seems to be an average student but then we mention some particularities –she is serious, her movements are concentrated, she seems to be a loner. I suppose, such a manner of behavior is the result of her father’s parenting. He is demanding, strict and harsh natured.

Her firmness and cold-bloodedness played a great role during the war. Lyudmila turned out to be a talented soldier and sniper. In summary, this woman killed three hundred and nine Nazis during the war and became the most productive female sniper of the world history. She was obliged to be at the war, this is her nature, her life and her destiny.

Alongside the theme of war, the film contains the next ones – the visit of the Soviet delegation to the United States and the theme of love and friendship.

As for the last, Lyudmila had got three affairs, which proves that there is a place of love in war - the closer death, the more you want to take all from your life.

During the visit to the US Lyudmila met the first lady Eleanor Roosevelt for the first time. Mrs. Roosevelt was totally impressed by the young courageous Russian woman. The most memorable scene was Lyudmila’s interview:

Gentlemen, I'm twenty-five years. On the battlefield, I killed three hundred and ninefascist invaders. Don’t you think, gentlemen, that you hide behind my back too long?!

To sum it up, I am totally satisfied with the film. It is a breathtaking story of our heroeswhom we owe our lives, freedom and happiness. They were similar to us. They all were just an average people with their own hopes, planes and personal life till the war took it all.

And it was them who sacrificed their lives for the sake of next generation, for the sake of us.

Pray for heroes.

Pray for peace.
