About the Author:
Mitch Albom was born in New Jersey in 1958 and is a middle child. He taught himself how to play piano and played in several bands while growing up. He studied Sociology. After graduation he travelled around the world. He then moved to New York, while in his 20s and took an interest in journalism.

Following this he decided to get a Master’s degree in Journalism and after that an MBA in Business.
When he finished his studies he took on full-time writing. He was a freelance sports journalist in New York for publications like Sports Illustrated and The Philadelphia Inquirer.

In 1985 he moved to Detroit and took a job as a sports writer for the Detroit Free Press.
Mitch Albom wrote four novels. His most famous one is Tuesday with Morrie, which has also been turned into a TV movie.

Personal Opinion:
The novel The five people you meet in heaven caught my attention in the beginning. I thought the idea of the novel was quite interesting and I had heard good reviews of other novels by Mitch Albom. Still after the first chapter, I grew more and more frustrated with the book.

First off, I thought a lot of the book seemed drawn out. Second, it always talked about how in heaven your life is explained to you and then you can move on, but I wasn’t satisfied with the explanation of Eddie’s life. To me it seemed like e retelling of his life. There didn’t seem to be this peak in the story.

And last but not least, it was just way too cheesy for me. All this about God and heaven and every person is intertwined annoyed me in a way. But that’s just a personal feeling. The ending was probably the tackiest and it literally destroyed the whole novel for me. He reached for her and he saw her smile and the voices melded into a single word from God: Home. (Page 209) I didn’t like the ending, it fits to the rest of the book but I thought it was corny and I am really no fan of corny.
What I did like was that the characters weren’t perfect or close to perfect like they are in some novels.

Characterization of Eddie’s Father:
The father breathes heavily, nods his head. For a moment, his face seems to crumble, like a bridge collapsing into a river. Then he smiles. His. (Page 21) When a man becomes a father, I believe, it’s a significant moment for every single one of them, for Eddie’s father as well.

Later he doesn’t turn out to be a good father and makes a lot of mistakes. He is described by Eddie as a drunk and violent man. He works at Ruby Pier and often stays there late to play cards before coming home stinking of alcohol and lashing out at his children.
The damage done by Eddie’s father was, at the beginning, the damage of neglect.

As an infant, Eddie was rarely held by the man, and as a child, he was mostly grabbed by the arm… his father was there for the discipline. (Page 109) As a child Eddie looked up to his father, like most children, but was always let down. He often went to Ruby Pier with him, dreaming of carousel rides with his father, but his father usually left someone else to take care of him, while he went drinking.

They stopped talking altogether. His father was disappointed. “Get up,” he yelled now, his words slurring, “and get a job.”Eddie defended himself against his father, who had never experienced disobedience from his children before. His ego was hurt and he wouldn’t be the first to apologize and so their relationship just stretched into one long silence.
Still one could not say that Eddie’s father was all bad.

He saved his friend, Mickey Shea, from drowning. But he had to jump into the cold water in the middle of the night to do so and got pneumonia, from which he later died.
Overall one could say that Eddie’s father was a man haunted by his own demons. He probably just couldn’t deal with his own problems and therefor tried to drown them with alcohol.

But in the end he is still a kind of antagonist of the story, since his parenting affected Eddie’s life very negatively. Eddie slumped against a stainless wall and dropped into a snowbank, stung again by the denial of a man whose love, almost inexplicably, he still coveted, even in heaven.

His father. The damage done. (Page 115)
