O. HENRY – THE GIFT OF THE MAGI
O. Henry is a pen name of an American short story writer William Sydney Porter.
His famous short story „The Gift of the Magi“ was published for the first time on 10th December 1905 in The New York Sunday World and later in his collection „The Four Million“ in April of the following year.
Della is a young lady who lives with her 22-year-old husband James Dillingham Young in a humbly furnished abode which costs 8 dollars per week.
As we find out in the course of the story, their only possessions are James' gold watch, which he inherited from his father and grandfather, and Della's astonishing long hair that she lately gladly sacrificed – „Della knew her hair was more beautiful than any queen’s jewels and gifts. If a king had lived in the same house, with all his riches, Jim would have looked at his watch every time they met.
Jim knew that no king had anything so valuable.“ Even though she has been saving the entire year, the sum total is a dollar and eighty five cents, which is not enough to buy her better half a Christmas present that would be precious and „worth the honor of belonging to Jim“.
