Book Report

I.Introduction of the book

  1. The title of the book is The Graduate.
  2. The author’s full name is Charles Webb.

1.      Charles Webb was born in Ogden, Utah, United States.

2.        Dean Hughes concentrates on messages of unity, truth, and love,” remarked a contributor for St. James Guide to young Adult Writers, “but the primary tie which pulls all of his works together is the note of hope on which they usually end.” Author of nearly ninety books for young readers, Hughes is a prolific and versatile writer of nonsense poetry, historical novels, sports novels, children’s stories, and young adult novels. Many of Hughes’s works for young people

           II. Appreciation of the book

A.      The book is a non-fiction book.

B.     What made this a good book is that it was full of practically everything that I’m interested in. In addition it is a really nice story. It was a true story in this time. Furthermore it was easy to read and understand to the book. Even though you are foreigner you will be able to understand the story perfectly. Also the author was extremely good at keeping the reader reading.

C.     I would rate this book as the best book I’ve read compared to other books that I’ve read. It was a pretty easy book to read and understand it, but it was very interesting and had a great storyline. People who like to read to read a book about war and relationship between parents and son. Then you should read this book.

D.    Yes, I do believe that I would like to read other books by Dean Hughes. My reason for this is because the author definitely knows how to keep the readers from putting down the book. I found myself wanting to keep reading even though I did not have the time. The other reason is because the most books of Dean Hughes are kids or teenager books. It is easy to read it

III. Reasons for liking the story

A.      The 6 characters that I’m going to describe in this section are Jay, Ken, Jay s Dad, Mom, Grandpa, Grandma. There description is as follows.

Jay is the main Character of the story. He is Year old and lived with his Mom in Salt Lake. As soon his Dad went to the war, Jay and his mom moved to Delta and they lived with Grandma and Grandpa. Jay found friends and was happy till the time he met Ken. I guess he was a very intelligent boy and he loved his Dad about everything. If somebody tried to talk bad about his Dad he stands up and didn’t let them to talk about his Dad. He also worked very hard. Even though he was very young he owned his own money.

Ken is one of the main characters too. He is 17 year old and graduate already from high school. He likes to attend a college. He is a Jap-American.  I guess he is very friendly, nice, and helpful guy. He worked with Jay on Jay’s Grandfathers field.

Jay’s father supposed to be a bad guy. He didn’t have a job. He couldn’t support his family. Jay’s mom wasn’t happy with him. Once they didn’t have food till his grandpa brought them some Groceries that show that he didn’t real care about his family. In addition he didn’t have time for his son.

Jay’s mom tried to take care about his Son. He tried to move from Salk Lake to Delta to give his son a better live. She also told him the real story about his Dad. She told him how his dad was. But they had pretty much a good relationship.

Jay’s Grandma and Grandpa was very nice person. They tried to do the best for Jay. His Grandpa gave him a job. His Grandpa pays him. They helped them a lot.

B.       Yes, the characters do seem alive. They undergo many events of everyday life. Like Jay is working with Ken. Their grandparents are taking with him, they fix supper, they have to sleep, the have to eat and drink. The characters are written about so realistically that you begin to thing that thing are actually real.

C.     Actually there is no action. The only action is when Jay has a fight with Ken about his Dad. But they didn’t hit each other. The just had a bad conversation.

D.    Yes, the book did have a surprise ending that was unpredictable.

        IV. Discussion

A. Yes, I thing this story could have happened in another time or place. I think this because for one we never know if we will have a 3. World War. If we would have another and somebody from another country is working in your country and your father is in his country as a soldier. I can image same thing like that can happen again.

B.     The differences there were between our town and the one in the story is that the place in the story is in the past. Like it was in World War 2. The kinds of the people that live in the story are everyday people like us, just from a different parent. Like Ken was a Jap-American, but he shouldn’t be different from everybody else.

C.     There are not other characters besides people.

D.    1. Through physical descriptions. In this area Jay was described straight forward by the author of the book.

2. Through actions the character performed. In this area Jay’s mom was described by his actions toward the way she talked about her husband.

 3. Through the way his actions influence others. Ken’s way how he worked influence on Jay. After that he started to work for his Grandpa.

4. Through dialog or the characters thoughts. I Think Jay’s grandma and grandpa fits in this area. Because they had most the time a dialog or you could fallow their thoughts.

 5. We know Ken and Jay’s dad most from the talk of other characters. We know Ken from Jay and grandpa very well, and we know Jay’s dad from her wife and from Jay’s grandma and grandpa.

E.     Yes, the main character does change. I say this because when jay grow a little bit up and owned his own money he broke the friendship with Ken. He talked very bad with his mom and run away from home.

F. Jay acts the way he does because he learns from experience throughout his lives. He would be mad by the time you start to talk bad about his Dad. Furthermore he saw a lot of bad thing in his young year. Like they didn’t have money for food or his mum talked bad about his Dad. I guess he was a strong Guy. There were too many pressures on him. He was treated like he was an adult.

          V.   Values gained from the book

A.      No, nothing happened in the book that I would like to have happen to me. There didn’t happen to many good things.

A.    Yes, something happened in the book that I would not like to have happen to me. Jay’s dad was in the War. I wouldn’t want my dad to be in the War. Especially in a War like that. In addition I wouldn’t like it either if somebody tries to talk bad about my dad. Because it doesn’t matter how he is. He is still your dad.

B.     Some of the best parts of the book were when Jay runs away and leave the city. When he get cut by a Sheriff. And the fight between Ken and Jay about Jay’s dad.

C.     The friendship with Ken was most important. Because before he didn’t see Ken he didn’t talk with him. Even though he didn’t talk with Ken the first couple days. Because he was a Jap. He didn’t want to talk wit a Jap.

D.    The author was trying to tell you how hard it is to be a foreigner and live in a foreign county.

E.     The book could be real. Because if I wouldn’t read this book and somebody would tell me this story, I would believe him, because there can’t be anything wrong.
