Abstract

In my work I would describe the history of the operating system OS/2.

OS/2 is a computer operating system, initially created by Microsoft and IBM, then later developed by IBM exclusively. The name stands for "Operating System/2," because it was introduced as part of the same generation change release as IBM's "Personal System/2 (PS/2)" line of second-generation personal computers.

OS/2 is no longer marketed by IBM, and IBM standard support for OS/2 was discontinued on 31 December 2006.Currently, Serenity Systems International sells OS/2 under the brand name eComStation.

World OS/2 is the whole set of systems based on base component - OS/2 Warp operating system. Which all charm that it, similarly to designer Lego, represents a set of "cubes" from which, if necessary, it is possible to collect practically any required configuration for execution of this or that task.

Thus, frequently, it is possible to do without additional expenses and efforts on support from the manufacturer. There are different versions and modifications OS.

Experience of the Russian and foreign users shows, that OS/2 has steady positions on a line of personal application in domestic conditions, in quality highly resistant, the protected system with more modest requirements to the equipment, than for other systems.

OS/2 Warp perfectly opens possibilities of Internet and has wide choice of the daily software.

Client OS/2 Warp system and OS/2 Warp Server will derivate a complete spectrum of services and solutions on small and average business, and also on the remote clients.

The openness of the platform, support of open standards, scalability of the system, convenient object graphic interface, Unix-organization of stack TCPIP, support practically all network protocols, good compatibility with a DOS / Win applications - makes all this OS/2 by universal choice for many tasks.

Development history

History OS/2 starts in 1987 when IBM Corp. together with Microsoft have decided to develop the new operating system for personal computers. The Microsoft appeared together with an IBM therefore as already cooperated with an IBM, having developed the MS DOS (more precisely speaking, the MS DOS was bought by the corporation of Microsoft in due time).

Already then the fact of becomes clear that the DOS long cannot exist on arena of operating systems by virtue of the limitation though, first of all, the new operating system reflects for new computers range IBM PS/2 on the basis of MCA architecture. One of main assignments - the functional link of personal COMPUTERS with mainframe computers (mainframes).

The new stage of development of operating systems has affected the name; new operating system was christened by the operating system of the second generation, in abbreviated form - OS/2 and is ordered the corporation of Microsoft.

Versions

  • OS/2 Version 1.0. Teamwork of an IBM and Microsoft was issued at the end of 1987. It had no graphics shell (worked only in the text mode) and had sufficient improvements concerning a DOS, for example, support of the RAM (up to 16 Megabytes) there was extended.

  • OS/2 Extended Edition version 1.0 and OS/2 versions 1.1 quit in October, 1988. Now in OS/2 support of databases and communications are included. OS/2 1.1 has graphics Presentation Manager Shell. Requirements to the RAM - the minimum 3, and is better than 6 Megabytes. (OS/2 1.0 EE costs (stands) 795 dollars).

  • OS/2 Version 1.2 - for the first time offers improved file system HPFS. The resource of double loading Dual Boot and in extended version 1.2 - powerful REXX language here too has appeared.

  • OS.2 Version 1.3 - the last version working on the processor 80286 and last, exiting in two variants of standard and extended edition (REXX language is present already at both editions) of innovations - support of scalable Adobe Type Manager Fonts. This version also in a number of the last Microsoft sold by the corporation (Under data from the book «IBM’s Official OS/2 Warp FAQs» Microsoft LAN Manager and to this day includes OS/2 1.3)

  • OS/2 2.0 quits in the beginning of 1990. Requirements - 386 processor or are higher, 4Мб the RAM. Support of SAA architecture (System Application Architecture) - the unified architecture of applications OS/2 2.0 - the first, officially supported not only on computers of an IBM, but also on computers of other corporations.

    OS/2 in version 2.0 has undergone the big reconstruction after break of partner ratios with Microsoft on development. Convenient object-oriented Workplace Shell interface has appeared ("desktop", a workstation), has appeared a floppy resource of loading Boot Manager, support of a DOS and a Windows of applications, and also the 32-bit program interface is seriously advanced.

  • In September of the Microsoft, concerned with a gain of the market of operating systems, incurs development following, completely 32 bit OS/2 3.0, and the IBM continues development OS/2 2.0. It, as a matter of fact, divorce - developed the corporation of Microsoft OS/2 3.0, at all does not save the name and is shown at Comdex exhibition ' 91 under a name of Windows NT - the first Windows with a preemptive multitasking (by the way, and to this day unique in this schedule).

    • In OS/2 2.1 version applications support of a Windows 3.1 (before the Windows 3.0 was supported) is added. Multimedia tools are included in delivery and the list of supported hardware devices is considerably refreshed.

    • Autumn of 1994 - OS/2 Warp 3.0. In a general plan, changes have touched only improvement of productivity of the system, lowering of the requirement to the RAM up to 4 Mbytes. The spectrum of supported hardware devices is extended. Has appeared new element —Launch Pad — the effective and floppy resource perfectly entered in object-oriented model of the interface.

  • September 26, 1996 appears following OS/2 version - Warp 4.0, "Marylin's". In this version complete handle of a voice, resources of the voice text entering, built - in mechanisms Java, OpenDoc is included, resources of operation in a wide-area network of Internet and other high technologies developed by corporation of an IBM. The design of the system is strongly changed and it is more successful (concerning the previous versions network features are worked).

  • In 1999 of an IBM releases new server OS/2 version - OS/2 Warp Server for e-Business (code name Aurora) - in abbreviated form OS/2 WSeB. External OS/2 has remained practically without changes; however internal processing’s have powerful enough character. In OS/2 v3.0 and v4.0 there was rather difficult construction of operation IFS which was realized through double translation of calls 32bit-> 16bit-> 32bit.

  • Instead of FDisk more powerful program under name LVM (Logic Volume Manager) now is used. Itallows not only to create to kill sections, but to mount them on other characters, to unite some sections in JFS volumes.

  • In the spring of 2000 year the American Serenity Systems company declares the name that to it the partner agreement from IBMs about the release of new client OS/2 version to tell the truth, this client version completely is achieved changes - the new client will be named eComStation, in abbreviated form eCS.

    Officially sales eCS 1.0 have begun in July, 2001. As a matter of fact, it is new modification OS/2 in which the interface is changed at the expense of inclusion in the kernel system of Styler/2 application and also the process of installation. The new resource of the distributed installation ON under name Wise Machine is added.

  • In the near future release ACP2 and MCP2 is expected.

    Chapter 3

    Comparison
    with
    Windows

    After IBM and Microsoft went their separate ways, Microsoft overhauled its version of OS / 2, Windows NT, and the very OS / 2 continued to develop the company IBM, which is still not paid this operating system due attention.

    May 21, 1990 came Windows 3.0.
    During the first month of its copies have been sold more than copies of OS / 2 for three years.
    Microsoft dominates the office software market for Windows.

    In 1991, Microsoft discontinued participation in the development of OS / 2, developed a hardware-independent OS renamed from «OS / 2, Version 3" «Windows NT».

    Version of OS / 2 Warp 3 seriously considered as a worthy competitor to Windows, but version 4 is no longer lay claim to it because of advertising Microsoft.
    October 26, 1996 came the next version - OS / 2 Warp 4.0 (Merlin).
    In 1999 appears the OS / 2 Warp Server for e-business (code-named "Aurora", a version of the system - 4.5).

    It is also interesting that in the process of collaboration, Microsoft created Windows for a much more user-friendly end-user code, relative to that of OS / 2 v1.10SE and OS / 2 v1.20.
    That is, in particular, all the kernel code and interfaces related to device drivers.

    Example procedure the printer in early versions of OS / 2:

    1) install device drivers;

    2) install the printer queue;

    3) create a printer;

    4) compare the device driver with the object of the printer;

    5) compare the print queue with the printer object;

    6) set COM-port for the printer connected to onomu port;

    7) with the SPOOL command to reassign the printer to the desired port;

    8) to determine the optional printer settings.

    Microsoft, officially refuse to support OS / 2 continues to follow closely the development of this operating system.
    Many details of the interface OS / 2, IBM and Microsoft have moved into a new operating system Microsoft - Windows 95.

  • OS /
    2
    gained some
    popularity
    among
    corporate customers and
    networkers.
    And
    today,many
    major
    corporations
    in
    Europe
    rely on
    OS /
    2
    managing
    their
    computer
    networks,but
    in Russia,
    OS /
    2
    is not
    widespread.
    Especially popular
    as
    a home
    operating
    system
    OS /
    2
    never used, being
    in the shadow of
    Windows,
    and
    later,
    Windows NT.
    Nevertheless,
    the efforts
    of both the
    IBM,
    and
    manycorporate
    and
    independent software developers
    were not in vain
    - OS /
    2
    is a
    stablesystem
    with predictable
    behavior
    and
    a good set of
    system and
    application
    programs.
    In this case,
    OS /
    2 is
    an
    independent
    line
    of
    operating systems,
    unlike
    Windows NTsignificantly
    lower
    hardware requirements, but
    on
    Linux -
    the best
    support
    programs
    for DOS
    and
    Win16.
