3rd BOOK REPORT: TASK SHEET

Title of the book:Thirteen Reasons Why Author: Jay Asher

The book is a young-adult novel that was published in 2007 by Penguin Books

Plot: Clay Jensen returns home from school and finds a box with tapes in it, in front of the front door. He can’t imagine who sent him such tapes and so he plays them in an old stereo.

After he has played the first 20 minutes of the first tape he understands. The tapes were sent by Hannah Baker, the girl he had a secret crush on and who commited suicide. On the tape she says, that every person that pushed her to commit suicide is dedicated a tape.

Clay can’t imagine what he did, and with every tape he listens to, the anxiety becomes more and more that he was the reason fo the suicide.
The tapes take him through the life of Hannah, from her first kiss to the day of her suicide. And after all thirteen tapes he understands why she did that.

1. I chose the book because .

.I have read the book before in German and I really liked the way it was written, so I thought that it would be interesting to read the book in English again. So I went to the big library in Vienna and borrowed it.

And I was right, it was a good decision to read the book again in English because there are many little differences between words that can be better expressed in English. I read the book in 2 hours.

2. Name and describe the main characters

Hannah Baker: A girl that commited suicide recently before the plot of the book begins. She was a very attractive girl but she was also the target of many rumors and she collapsed under the pressure that was performed on her. She is the main-narrator of the story.

Clay Jensen: A boy that went to the same class like Hannah and secretly had a crush on her. He is the 9th person to get the tapes from Hannah. He is the co-narrator.

There are 11 other characters that are important for the stoty but aren’t such main characters like these two. There names are (listed in the order of receiving the tapes): Justin Foley, Alex Standall, Jessica Davis, Taylor Down, Courtney Crimson, Marcus Cooley, Zach Dempsey, Ryan Shaver, Jenny Kurtz, Bryce Walker and Mr. Porter.

3. Make notes about the story under these headings:

* opening * build-up * climax * resolution

Opening: The Book starts with a quick entry without any explanation of time and location. The first 5 sites are just about his thoughts about the box and the tapes in it.

Build-up: The story is built up in a very interesting way and it increases the suspense a lot. The book is very interesting and the language used is also a reason why the book is so good and why you can’t stop reading it

Climax: In the book there are two main climaxes. The first one is the climax when you find out what part Clay played in the story of Hannahs suicide. The second one is the one when you find out what exactly brought Hannah to comitting suicide.
Actually there are many smaller climaxes, one in every chapter, because it is everytime exciting to know what part the people played that got these tapes

Resolution: After listening to all of the tapes he goes back to school and sees that a girl, Skye Miller, is going through the same phases and showing the same signs that Hannah showed, so he tries to go after her and prevent her from doing this

I think that the Author knows very well how to use a language to make the book interesting for so many young adults.

The first sentence of the book is a very strong sentence so I thought that might be the bes sentence to start with:
"I hope you're ready, because I'm about to tell you the story of my life.

More specifically, why my life ended. And if you're listening to these tapes, you're one of the reasons why." Hannah Baker recorded seven cassette tapes, with thirteen sides, thirteen reasons why Hannah decided she “needed to get on with things.” Things being her life.

The tapes are thirteen different stories which all were different results from the story on CASSETTE 1: SIDE A.
The next sentence is one that I really like because it is possible to use that sentence in our normal live. And it made me think about it a lot:

The last sentence I’ve chosen is this one, it lets me think about the things that I do, a lot:

“When you mess with one part of a persons life, you’re messing with their entire life. Everything affects everything.“

5. Make up three questions you could ask someone about this book to test whether they

have read it carefully.

1. What should the school counselor have done to prevent Hannah from killing herself?

2. What happened to Hannah after the second party?

3. Why did Clay steal the walkman from his friend?

6. Any further comment:
The book was one of the best books I’ve ever read, it touched my soul . (I know that this sounds cheesy). After the book I’ve thought a lot, and I thought about my actions and how these affect peoples lifes.

I began to love this book and I read it about seven times so far. I would recommend this book to everyone, I know that not only young adults like this book because I lent it to several adults yet and they loved it. This book changed me, my life, my view on actions and the view that I had about other people that are getting bullied.
