To kill a mockingbird - Symbols (names) Of Femininity

Symbols (names) Of Femininity

Alexandra Finch

Alexandra is the sister of Jack and Atticus. In the book she symbolizes a typical “Southern Bell”.

A Southern Bell is in the American culture, a cultured, educated and well-dressed lady.

She is a member of the missionary circle.

Alexandra would also never wear pants and she shares the opinion that Scout should behave more like a lady. That is also a reason why Scouts and Alexandra's relation is difficult. They have to many differences. Alexandra also wants to keep everything in order.

Miss Maudie

Miss Maudie Atikson lives in the neighbourhood. Close to the place of the Finch family.

She is a classic example of the liberal/modern woman.

She hates staying inside the house and always works outside in her garden between her flowerbeds. She is also very traditional because after she is working in her garden she always takes a bath.

Harper Lee uses the contrast of Alexandra and Miss Maudie to further delineate the theme of tolerance in the novel. Miss Maudie respects Scout as she is and doesn't try to change her like Alexandra is trying to do. Alexandra seems to work hard to be as most feminine as she can be, but Miss Maudie seems to not care about these things.

Miss Maudie is tolerant, which Alexandra is the opposite.

Calpurnia

Calpurnia is the cook of the family and also takes over the motherly role. She is like a mother to the children since their real mother passes away. She takes care of them and gives them the love they need.

Calpurnia also gives discipline to the children that Atticus doesn’t give. A good example, we can find, beginning on page 26-27, when Walter Cunningham had dinner with the Finch family.

When Scout was criticizing that Walter eats his vegetables and meat with syrup, Calpurnia directed her to finish her dinner in the kitchen. Sometimes she is the one who has the pants on. Especially when Atticus isn’t at home, she tries to guide the children in the right way.

Miss Rachel Haverford is the aunt of Dill and lives in the neighbourhood. She is sympathetic lady, who takes care of Dill in the summer. She is there for him especially since Dill's dad doesn't ''exist''.

Rachel is a motherly role model next to Calpurnia and Miss Maudie.

Miss Dubose

Miss Dubose is an old embittered lady, who tries to overcome her addiction to morphine. She is a role model to the kids as someone as a strong individual, who is trying to get their life normal. Even though back then morphine wasn’t considered as a too dangerous drug, she still saw that it ruined her life and tried to slow down a little bit.

So she is a role model for strength for Scout and Jem growing up, because she fought with herself to stop her morphine addiction.

She is showing Scout that women are strong too and that they can overcome troubles as well. Not just men. She shows that women are not weak.

Mrs Merriweather

Mrs Merriweather is the best example of a typical gossip girl. The best example to show that, is the situation where she is gossiping about Atticus at his place, which is pretty disrespectful. She is a member of the missionary society like Alexandra and strong religious.

Miss Caroline Fisher

Miss Caroline Fisher is the teacher of Scout, who tries to teach as modern as she can. She likes discipline and is strict. The kids don't really like her teaching, but she doesn't give up and tries to behold her face. She is a woman that is teaching the class and back in that day it had just gotten down that women had equal rights to work and to actual teach.

She is a symbol for a hard working lady.

Mayella

Mayella is the victim of society and the fact that she is a woman had brought her in trouble. She is considered as weak, but all she wanted was to get loved, since her father abused her.

Scout, Jean-Louise Finch is a girl with a boyish character. She doesn’t act like a girl and would rather play in yard than wearing dresses. Alexandra tries to turn Scout in a real girl. But it doesn’t work as good as she was hoping it would.

Scout is growing up and is maturing throughout the book. She is learning and all these feminine figures, Alexandra, Miss Maudie, Mrs Merriweather, Calpurnia, Miss Dubose, Miss Haverford and Miss Fisher helped her see that women were not as weak and feeble as she thought.

The book is trying to show how she grew up and learned all kind of lessons and saw how there is injustice in the world. Scout had to go thru a bunch of trouble and understands that women are strong and hard working. Scout realized that she had a lot of female role models that guided her and helped her mature throughout life.
