2. The Tryst Under the Tree (p.47-59)

·         Group of barons have led the King to believe that his wife Yseut and nephew Tristan are in love. Mark refuses to let Tristan remain at court

·         Tristan often used to sneak into the castle to see Yseut but dwarf Frocin found out and told the King. One night Mark climbs into the braches of a tree near the spring to eavesdrop on their conversation but without him knowing, Yseut and Tristan see his shadow and thus plan their conversation

·         Yseut says how angry the King would be if he knew they were together, even though they have no feelings for one another. Tristan highlights how much the King hates him despite him wanting to serve him

·         The King feels guilty and pity and wants to hang the dwarf of Tintagel but can’t find him. Yseut consults her maid Brangin and Tristan tells Governal what happened.

·         King sends for Yseut and asks her if she has seen his nephew. Yseut tells him about their encounter and the King confesses to hiding up a tree. He is no longer angry with his nephew and allows him to enter his chamber.

3. The Flour on the Floor (p.60-65)

·         Three wicked barons at court tell the King they will make war on him if he does not make his nephew leave the country. King doesn’t want to lose their service so asks them to advise him.

·         Frocin tells the King to tell his nephew that he must take a letter to King Arthur in Carlisle. Tristan sleeps at the end of the King’s bed. He is bound to want to see Yseut during the night so tells the King to leave the room in the early night. King agrees to plan and dwarf tells Tristan what he must do

·         Frocin spreads flour between the two beds so that footprints would appear if one went to the other during the night. Tristan realises what he’s up to

·         King leaves room at midnight. Tristan leaps on King’s bed but wound opens and blood soaks the sheets. When King and dwarf come in, Tristan pretends to be asleep. Barons take Tristan and abuse and threaten the Queen. King has poof they are guilty and Tristan begs the King to have mercy on his wife. He wishes he had killed the barons

4. The Condemnation and Escape of the Lovers (p.66-75)

·         People think Tristan shouldn’t be put to death- after all he undertook the battle in Cornwall and killed Morholt. King refuses to listen to the people. Orders the fire to be lit and wants to burn his nephew. Yseut upset. Tristan asks to enter chapel and tells them there is no way he can get out. He leaps out the window and flees while people are on their knees in the church

·         Governal has gone out of the city on horseback. Tristan sees him and tells him he has escaped, although he thinks he might as well die if he can’t be with Yseut. Gives him a hauberk and tells him not to despair. Meanwhile, a messenger tells Yseut that her lover has escaped and the King finds out about his nephew’s escape.

He sends for Yseut to be burnt but Dinas begs him to have mercy of the Queen. King still wants to burn her so Dinas goes to see Dinan.

·         A leper called Ivain call to the King to suggest an alternative punishment for Yseut. He wants to share Yseut with his 100 companions and sleep with her. Yseut says she would rather be burnt but the King hands her over to the lepers. Tristan springs out of the bush and tells Ivain to let her go or he will cut his head off.

Lepers pant taking off their cloaks and holding their crutches. Governal comes out and strikes Ivain with a stick of green oak. Tristan grasps Yseut’s right hand and the three of th.....[read full text]

10. Mark’s Discovery of the Lovers (p.89-95)

·         The forester finds them in the bower and runs to King Mark who is in the hall holding an assembly of his barons. Knowing the proclamation, he tells the King he has found Tristan, hoping the King will not gget angry. The King demands he tells him where they are and tells him he will give him as much gold and silver as he wants.

They meet at the Croiz Rouge and the King lies to his barons, telling them a girl has sent for him to come quickly. As they draw near, the King draws his sword but he sees that the queen is wearing her tunic, that the lovers are spaced apart by a sword and that their mouths are not touching. He does not touch and instead takes the emerald ring off the queen’s finger and replaces Tristan’s sword with his own then both depart

·         Dreaming about lions, Yseut suddenly wakes up with a cry which makes Tristan leap up with his sword. He realises that it’s the King’s sword and the queen realises her ring has gone and both realise the King hs discovered them. They think he must have gone back to get more men.

Their squire returns and they tell him what’s happened. They ride away in great haste and head for Wales. For three years they had suffered greatly and their flesh had grown pale and limp.

11. The Love Potion (p.95-98)

·         Yseut’s mother brewed the love potion which caused Tristan and Yseut to suffer. It was made for three years of love for Mark and her daughter. The three years come to an end and at the very hour Tristan begins to repent. He talks about his hardship, how he has been in exile and how he ought to be at court.

Yseut says to herself that it was Brangain’s fault that they feel in love because the potion was in her guard. Tristan says to her that he wants them to be reconciled with the King. If he only took her back, he would go to the king of Dumfries or to Brittany. Tristan says they should go back to the hermit Ogrin and with his help they should send a letter to King Mark.

12. The Hermit Ogrin. II (p.99-108)

·         They find the hermit Ogrin reading and sit down in his chapel. Ask him to help them reconcile the queen and King Mark. Tells Yseut to send a letter from the queen to Lantayn with her greetings to the King and saying that if he would forgo his anger, Tristan would go to his court.

If he is willing to listen, he should offer to make his defence at his court. Tristan decides to deliver the letter with his squire. He calls out to the King, saying he will leave the letter on the window ledge but the King springs out of bed and tells him to wait.

·         Tristan returns to the hermit. The King awakes his household and hands the letter to his chaplain. When the King hears the letter, he is pleased as he loves his wife very much. He sends for his barons and the chaplain reads the letter to them all after Dinas says they are hear to give him good advice.

The letter explains how Tristan he crossed the sea to Ireland and killed the dragon and how he escaped being burnt. Hearing Tristan’s offer to do battle with them for the sake of the king of Ireland’s daughter. all the barons advise him to take back his wife but not allow Tristan to remain on this side of the sea. The chaplan writes a letter saying to Tristan and affixes it to the Croiz Rouge.

·         Tristan is sad at the thought of having to part with Yseut. Yseut asks for his dog Husdent because it will remind her of him. She gives him a ring with a green jasper mounted and tells him she won’t believe nothing if he sends a messenger to him unless she sees the ring. They kiss each other to signif.....

·         The King rides back to Tintagel to his castle with his sword. Yseut takes the sword off him and sees he is upset. The King explains about the three evil barons and the queen is surprised that he is angry with the three men who first accused her. Yseut says she will vindicate herself concerning Tristan.

Says she will have King Arthur and his household present at the Blanche Lande. A proclamation is made throughout the land declaring a time for fifteen days ahead

·         Yseut tells Perinis to tell Tristan that he should stand on the mound at the Malpas wearing the garments of aleper. He should carry a wooden drinking-cup tied by a strap to a bottle underneath, with a staff in his other hand. He should simply ask for alms from passers-by. Tristan agrees and He has a plan which will save Yseut from the oath and will try to get alms off the King.

·         Perinis then goes off in search of the King to ask him to come and hear the queen’s oath with a hundred knights. He asks a shepherd where he is then count tells the King that the horseman is waiting outside. Is glad to hear news about his wife and says he will make him a knight.

Explains how Tristan offered to clear himself and to defend the queen against the accusation of disloyalty but no one was bold enough to take up arms. Sys how queen wants him to be at the Gué Aventuros so she can be exculpated. They weep at what they are demanding from her and want to kill the villains

·         King Arthur agrees to the meeting and tells his men to dress their horses in rich clothes. The King accompanies the squire. He refuses to accept the equipment of a knight. Before the part, he tells him to tell the queen that he will do everything to help her. Yseut is very happy to hear from King Arthur and Tristan while at Lidan

Yseut’s Ambiguous Oath (p.127-143)

·         It s the tenth night after new moon. Tristan dresses as a leper and Governal advises him not to communicate with the queen. Governal gets Tristan’s armour then goes into hiding at the Malpas. Tristan sits on the mound and makes people take out their purses. Peasents try to harm him but he shoos them away.

Tristan calls out to knights and King Arthur for clothes and he gives him his gaiters. He then tries to get something out of King Mark and he gives him his fur hood. He sees he is from Caerleon, the son of a Welshman. He says he got the malady from her lover’s lord but says .....

She excludes those two from the oath but no-one else in the world. Everyone says she has done everything that justice demands and in future they agree to defend the rights of the fair Queen Yseut.

·         The three villains are greatly hated by all the court. Yseut thanks King Arthur and the King says he has begged the King never to believe what villains say about her. King Arthur goes to Durham and King Mark stays in Cornwall. Tristan remains where he is with few worries.

Tristan’s Vengeance (p.143-148)

·         A spy comes to the three villains and says he has seen Tristan waiting to talk to his dear love. Says Tristan often comes to see the Queen and they will be able to see him tonight in the early hours. Says he will show them if he is given a silver mark as a reward.

Tells them there is a little narrow opening by the queen’s bedroom with a curtain hanging in front of it. They should pull the curtain gently away from the opening and they are bound to see him over the next three days. Godwin goes first.

·         Meanwhile, Yseut has sent a message to Tristan telling him to come to her the next day at midnight. Tristan sees Godwin coming out of his hiding place and wishes him to come his way but he goes off into the distance. He then notices Denoalan and kills him as he believed that he would kill him otherwise.

He cuts off his head then the hair and sticks it in his boots. Godwin is at Yseut’s room. Yseut sees him. Tristan shows her the hair. She asks him to stretch a bow and Tristan can see something is displeasing her. He sees Godwin then pierces his eye with an arrow which goes deep into his head and brain.

·         Yseut tells Tristan to flee and the lovers h.....

Queen keeps her face covered with a cloak.

·         Tristan shows the ring to Yseut who will not believe it’s him. He has come all the way over just to see her. Yseut calls to her maid and says the fool is saying things which remind her of the many things she did with Tristan. Yseut sends for him. Brangain senses she is noble and knows it is Tristan.

She begs him for forgiveness. Brangain says to Yseut what sort of welcome is this for a lover. Yseut says she is wrong and says the young man is too sly. Tristan recounts the things he did with her- about the leap from the chapel Yseut allows him to see Husdant and the dog recognizes Tristan and leaps on him. He then shows Yseut the ring and she knows it is him. She kisses his eyes and nose and face.

But he then has to return to Brittany and Yseut of the White Hands but still longs for Yseut the Fair.

Summary of the concluding events of the romance: the death of the lovers (p.164)

·         Tristan helps his friend Kaherdin in carrying on a love affair with the wife of a neighbouring knight. They are attacked by the retainers of the angry knight. Kaherdin is killed and Tristan is badly wounded. He knows Yseut the Fair is the only one who can cure it and sends a messenger to her to beg her to come to Britany.

If the messenger is successful n his mission, his ship is to bear white sails on its return; if not, black. Yseut sets out o Brittany. Tristan is ill in bed and on discovering that the ship is in sight, he enquires as to the colour of the sails. Jealous Yseut of the White Hands, having overheard the conversation, lies and says the sails are black. Tristn dies and when Yseut arrives, people tell her of the death of Tristan.

She kisses him and dies

·         Their bodies are taken to Cornwall for King Mark decides to give them an honourable burial in the church of Tintagel, one on each side of the nave. The story is told of two trees that grew miraculously, one from Tristan’s tomb and one from Yseut’s and their branches intertwine.

Three times King Mark has the trees cut down, and three ties they grow again. Some say it is the power of the .....
