hoVideo Game Addiction

What is video game addiction?

Video Game addiction is the need of computers and video games to make one’s life livable. Not only do 97% of children
age 12-17 play video games in their spare time but in average they spend twice the time using media than working for school. Video game addiction can be explained by the “god effect”, the ability to manipulate everything in the game.

This is very attractive for teens our age without great influence in the outer world. Video games often appear harmless, but can be very damaging to a child’s development unless controlled or limited by a third party. Games are programmed to be addicting. This is the goal game producers want to achieve.

The symptoms and consequences
The most common symptom is the isolation from family and friends, and focusing on in-game achievements rather than other life events. Many gamers lack imagination and show symptoms of addiction similar to drug and alcohol addiction, such as extreme mood changes, irregular sleeping habits, changes in energy and weight loss or weight gain.
Many scientists describe the consequences as rather “passive” since the actual
playing of video games does not affect your health.

Highly action-packed games often let your body produce chemicals such as adrenaline which are not used up by your body since it is not you who actually has to run, but the person you control.
Many gamers play during night time which damages your overall physical and mental health.

German psychiatrist and best seller author Manfred Spitzer
once said in an interview that “Steve Jobs and Bill Gates wouldn’t be where they are now if they spent their childhood playing videogames.”A teen who possesses the talent to become a future Nobel Prize recipient may have to settle as a teacher because he wasted too much time gaming as a teenager.

This waste of talent hurts not only the individual, but also for our society as a whole.
An extreme example of video games corrupting people’s lives found in Elyria, Ohio, where a seventeen year-old boy named Daniel Petric shot his parents in the head after they confiscated his copy of 'Halo 3.' His mother was killed and his father wounded due to the gunshots, and he fled with solely one item in his possession: the 'Halo 3' game.
