View on Euthanasia bill. Reasons for view.

Euthanasia is the act of assisting the patients to relieve their pains by ending their lives. The purpose of Euthanasia bill is "people with a terminal illness or a grievous and irremediable medical condition the option of requesting assisted dying."

This is to relieve the family of the patient from having to watch their loved one from suffering. When someone is in pain or agony from the suffering of their disease, some people think that they cannot do anything to lessen the patient's pain. Through Euthanasia, some families believe that they have a chance to take away some of the patient's pain.

Some patients wish for their sooner deaths not only because they are suffering but also because of the emotional distress and financial state of their family. Life support machines costs a lot of money, some people believe that it is impractical and there is no reason to watch and wait for the patient to die while their money are being used up for hospital bills.

Those patients who are severely in pain could not enjoy the company and visits of their loved ones. The family that are left behind could use their money for something else instead of spending it for hospice care bills.

Those patients who have no hope in full recovery such as the terminally ill patients and severely disabled patients should have the right to decide when and how they want to end their life. For most terminally-ill and disabled patients, each day goes by with going through consistent pain, agony, suffering, struggling and emotional distress.

A doctor should be allowed to assist the patients for painless death without having to worry with legal consequences. Some people believe that it is more humane to die before they go through the painful and sorrowful stages of their disease.

Those patients who are terminally ill are in constant pain and agony and it is their choice whether or not they would want to die slowly and have painful death. Those who support euthanasia believe it is only humanitarian and democratic if we allow those patients to have a quick, easy and painless death.

Some patients cannot bear and handle the pain, they feel like death is the only escape from the pain they are going through.

Those who support the Euthanasia bill believes that no one wants to see their loved ones to pass away but no one also wants to see their loved ones die in agony. It is inhumane for both the patient and the families to force the patient to live their lives with constant grief and pain.

Allowing and legalizing euthanasia does not mean that all sick patients and disabled patients must die. It gives the family of the patient or the patient a choice to accept their illness and gives them the freedom to choose. Each human has the right to live and has the right to choose not to live.

Consideration of opposing reasons.

Legalizing euthanasia decreases the society's respect of sanctity of life. This allows the people to think that one's life is less worth than the other individual.

  • Can be traumatizing for those who will be operating euthanasia

  • Patients who are depressed most likely to decide impulsively that they want to take their life away, this is because they see themselves as burden to their families. Some patients want to go through euthanasia even before going through the painful stages of their illness.

  • Those unbearable pain that patients feel could may be more about emotional distress and not the physical pain. Some patients want to give up easily, we should not support suicide. We do not exactly know what "unbearable" is, the "unbearable" that other people feels could be bearable to others.

  • Involuntary euthanasia - In some cases, doctors and families are the one who decides to take away the patient's life without their consent. Some patients have no choice but to undergo euthanasia due to their family's choice. Their right to live is taken away from them.

  • The euthanasia impairs the doctors and nurses' responsibility of saving lives.

  • By legalizing the euthanasia, it will impede the search for new cures and solutions for those who have terminal illness.

  • Patients will have to put under pressure knowing that there is a choice to end their life so that they will not be a burden to their family anymore. This makes them feel that they are causing unbearable misery to their family.

  • Euthanasia is against the will and word of God.

  • We should not end our lives just because it seems like it is the most reasonable way of putting an end to our pain. By doing that, we are not respecting ourselves and it also damages our self-worth.

  • Legalizing Euthanasia makes it easier to commit murder.

  • Requesting euthanasia is an irreversible decision, the patient might regret requesting it in the last minute but had no choice because they are already dead. Furthermore, those patients may have guilt for leaving their family and friends behind.

  • Similarities:

Human Rights – Right to choose whether they want to live.

For those who are against euthanasia, they believe that the right to live is being taken away from some patients because it is their families who decide to take away the patient's life. For those who are supporting euthanasia, they believe that people should have the right to choose whether they want to live or not.

They acknowledge that it is wrong to force the patient to live in agony.

Critical judgement (Your opinion after weighing up both sides)

As a Catholic, I believe that we should not approve the Euthanasia bill. I believe that God has given us life and therefore, He is the only one who has the right to take it away from us. He should be the one to decide when and how are we going to die. Our lives are only borrowed from him.

Preventing someone to take away their lives is something we are able to do. Those people who make such decisions are depressed, feeling hopeless and down. When people are depressed or overly sad, they think and make decisions poorly. We should support them and make them feel loved while they are still alive.

I believe that relieving someone's suffering is good as long as it does not require killing someone intentionally.
