Volunteering at home or abroad? 11.1

Nowadays a lot of students think about volunteer work. I also thought about it and had a lot of questions that need to be answered. Luckily, I read an article about it. In the article there were many interesting topics e.g. if I should go abroad or rather stay at home.

That specific topic was very arguable as I asked my friends and relatives about it. I heard a lot of cons and even more pros. Therefore, I decided to write about it myself. Hence, in the following text I will write about if you should stay at home or go abroad to volunteer.

I’ll give arguments which support and not support both sides.

In the beginning, I want to talk about volunteering abroad. I absolutely support it because you can experience so much while being in a foreign country. For example, you can meet the people’s culture from a different point of view. You’ll see how they actually live, what they wear, what they eat and what makes them so unique.

However, you obviously have to be able to deal with the new culture and people. It can be really challenging sometimes since the people are so different. Some are in a wheelchair and some are mentally unstable. You can’t say that you aren’t in a mood to help or something like that.

When you decide to volunteer, you’re in a commitment and you should treat it with the seriousness you would if it was a paid job.

Nothing would really change, you’d just have an unpaid job. Although don’t get me wrong I probably would have done that option as a little kid. But now that we’ve grown so much our opinions can massively change. It does sound a little bit boring doesn’t it? But then again, you would be with your loved ones and would be there where it was and probably still is the most comfortable.

Nevertheless, everyone needs change. For instance, you can taste new food thus change your eating habits. Meet new people, even learn a new language, discover new items that you have never seen before and most importantly enjoy your experience while being abroad.

To sum it up, I think you know what I rather would do. Volunteering abroad seems like such a cool experience and I would love to do it. It is something new and challenging. It forces you to grow and to be more independent. But as I said people have different opinions about it.
